Between Me and the Bullet
HANNAH’S POV:
She laughed softly. “Leave? Oh, Hannah. You think you can erase me that easily? You stole my fiancé, paraded my humiliation, and now what? You’re parading everywhere thinking you’ve won?”
“I didn’t steal anyone,” I said through clenched teeth. “Elijah made his choices. And I don’t even want him, so you should work on getting back like you always do. I bet you have a plan.”
Her eyes darkened. “A plan?” she repeated, tilting her head. “You think you are better than me, don’t you?”
I rolled my eyes and let out a breath as the sharpness in her voice made a few people glance in our direction, but she took a step closer, lowering her tone. “You don’t deserve him, Hannah. You never did. And you’re so good at pretending….so good at playing innocent while everyone bends over to protect you.”
The twins clung to me now, sensing the tension. “Mom…” Amelia whispered, her voice trembling.
“Sweetheart, it’s fine,” I murmured, my heart thudding. “Just stay behind me.”
Janet turned her head to the side and though she was in costume, I just knew she was smiling. “You really think you’re safe, don’t you?”
And then, in one swift motion, she reached into her purse. I froze.
The world seemed to blur, the sound of laughter, the scent of sugar, the bright colors, all dimmed as I saw the glint of metal.
A small, sleek handgun. Silenced.
“Janet,” I whispered, stepping in front of the twins boldly and sternly said to her. “Don’t do this.”
She smiled, a cold, brittle thing. “You took everything from me. So I’ll just take it back. My entire life is a mess, all because you returned, and you think you should leave your life and enjoy what’s meant to be mine, and I should just let you enjoy.”
“Leave my mum alone.” Andrew’s voice could be heard but I just held their hands tightly around my hips and legs.
I barely had time to move as her next words were, “Good bye, Hannah.”
She raised her arm, and instinct took over, I shoved the twins behind me and closed my eyes, bracing for the impact I thought would come.
But it never did.
Instead, there was a sharp gasp, a sound that sliced through the chaos, and when I opened my eyes, Elijah was standing in front of me, his back turned.
