No More Gaslighting (2)
3RD POV:
Her father’s voice rose slightly, “Because there’s no proof, Hannah! None! Janet’s been through hell because of you. The least you can do is stop adding fuel to her misery.”
Her voice trembled from rage, not fear. “Her misery? What about mine? What about Elijah’s? What about my children watching the man who protects them fall to the ground because of her? Are you crazy?”
“Watch your tone, young lady!” Her father snapped like he was talking to a little child and Hannah stared at him with pure irritation.
Her mother crossed her arms. “You’ve always dramatized things. Maybe you saw or heard wrong-
“Don’t.” Hannah’s voice dropped, cold and dangerous. “Don’t you dare gaslight me again.”
They froze at the venom in her tone. The last trace of the obedient daughter they used to control was gone.
“I’m done letting you rewrite reality to protect Janet,” she continued, her voice steady now. “You raised her to believe she could do anything, hurt anyone, and you’d still clean up the mess. And look where that’s gotten us. You’re standing here defending an attempted murderer because it’s easier than admitting you failed her.”
Her father’s jaw clenched and said yet again. “Watch your mouth—”
“No,” she said, cutting him off, tears stinging her eyes. “You watch yours. Stay away from me. Stay away from Elijah. Stay away from my children. Whatever you and Janet choose to believe, it’s none of my concern anymore.’
Her mother’s face flushed with fury. “Do you know who you are talking to?”
“I do and I don’t care,” Hannah whispered. “You are the worst set of parents any child could ever again for, and everyday I wake up to be nothing like you to my kids.”
And with that, she turned and walked away. Her heels echoed in sharp, final clicks against the tiled floor until the bathroom door swung shut behind her.
Inside, she leaned against the sink, breathing hard. The fluorescent light flickered weakly, throwing her reflection in and out of focus. Her hands trembled as she turned on the tap, letting icy water rush over her palms. She tried to scrub away the blood that wasn’t even there anymore.
