With that, Adela Ludwig waved her hand dismissively and stood up to leave.
Seeing that it was getting late and that Davina still had to drive her home before returning to her own, Ivy knew she couldn't delay any longer. Reluctantly, she accepted the family heirloom.
Not long after they were in the car, Halley fell asleep in his mother's arms. Once her son was sleeping soundly, Davina began to chat quietly with Ivy.
"Mom is all bark and no bite. She probably wanted to give you this jewelry set for a while but couldn't find the right moment or bring herself to do it. In her heart, she accepted you a long time ago."
Clutching the priceless jewelry in her hands, Ivy smiled faintly. "I know. I'm well aware of how people truly feel about me."
She wasn't naive or oblivious; on the contrary, her instincts were sharp. After she and Jamison got together, she never let the matriarch's sharp words bother her - mainly because she saw right through that tough exterior from the very beginning.
From the moment they had privately agreed to a three-year trial period, she had subconsciously known that the old woman had already compromised. Otherwise, with decades of experience as a powerful matriarch, if she truly wanted to break them up, it would have been, if not easy, then almost certain to succeed.
"As long as you understand, that's what matters. For now, don't overthink anything. Just focus on taking care of yourself and preparing to be a mother. And don't worry too much about Jamison. With you and the baby, he won't give up or be careless. I'm sure you two will live a long and happy life together."
Ivy believed so too, and she thanked her sister-in-law sincerely. The two of them talked at length about pregnancy, and Davina, with her wealth of experience, shared several helpful tips for alleviating morning sickness.
…
When Ivy arrived home, her WhatsApp video call rang almost immediately.
She answered, frowning in disapproval. "It's past ten. Why aren't you asleep yet? Do I need to come over and supervise you?"
Jamison was lying on his side, half his handsome face buried in a pillow, looking utterly docile and harmless. "Don't be angry. I'll sleep right after we talk," he said softly, his tone full of affection. "Did you have a good dinner? Grandma didn't give you a hard time, did she?"
Ivy's lips curved into a smug smile. "You underestimate me. If I truly want to win someone over, there's no one I can't handle."
"Heh, listen to you, getting all cocky."
"Well…" Ivy sighed dramatically. "I wouldn't say cocky, but it's true that a mother's status rises with her child. To think that I, a modern woman who prides herself on independence and career, would be defined by the value of my uterus."
Dr. Ludwig chuckled. "What do you mean?"
She held up the ornate box. "Do you know what this is?"
