The owner came over, and they chatted briefly about the menu. Once their order was placed and the owner stepped away, Ivy turned to Jamison, looping her arm through his and giving it a gentle tug.
"What's wrong?" he asked, glancing back at her.
Ivy cut right to the chase. "I should be asking you that. You've been acting incredibly strange today."
The last time he had acted this out of character was four years ago—right after he was diagnosed with cancer.
A jolt of pure terror shot through her. Without giving him time to answer, she pressed, "How was your checkup today? Were the results okay?"
Jamison's expression remained dangerously calm. He stared into his wife's eyes, a fleeting look of agonizing hesitation crossing his features.
Ivy knew him far too well. That initial shock morphed into icy dread, spreading rapidly through her veins and making her entire body tremble.
"Has it... relapsed?" Her voice shook violently.
Jamison quickly grabbed her hands, rushing to explain. "Nothing is confirmed. Some of the numbers were off, and Director Wylde wants me to come back tomorrow for a more comprehensive scan. It could just be exhaustion, or a temporary spike caused by medication."
Hearing his explanation brought her a fraction of relief.
"I'm going with you tomorrow."
Jamison knew there was no stopping her. He nodded in defeat. "Alright, if you can make the time."
Of course she could make the time!
Ivy immediately pulled out her phone and called her team, clearing her schedule for the entire next morning.
"My schedule is clear. You are my priority. Your health is the only thing that matters." Ivy gripped his hands tightly. She was terrified, internally panicking, but she forced herself to stay calm. "I'm sure it's just a false alarm. Please don't worry yourself sick."
Jamison managed a faint smile, reaching up to caress her cheek. "I think you're the one who's terrified."
"I'm not. I've weathered worse storms than this. We'll be fine."
Ivy offered a brave smile before swiftly changing the subject. "Let's figure out what we're doing after dinner. It's still early."
"Do you want to catch a movie or take a walk by the river?" The restaurant was close to the waterfront, and since it was early summer, the promenade would be lively.
"Let's walk by the river," Ivy said. "I want to be around people."
"Okay."
The food arrived quickly, but Ivy had entirely lost her appetite.
Jamison let out a heavy breath. "I shouldn't have told you. I knew this would ruin your dinner."
"No, that's not it. I'm just not hungry. Edmond bought us snacks after our afternoon meeting around four, so I'm still full," Ivy quickly lied.
Edmond was now a partner at the firm and Ivy's direct supervisor.
