Her phone chimed with a notification. She glanced toward the sofa.
Seeing that her husband was already asleep, she gently slipped her hand from his grip and walked over to grab her phone.
It was a WhatsApp message from Katrina.
[Ivy, Naylor's results came back. He's not a match either...]
[Any news on your end? Did anyone match?]
Reading the text, Ivy suddenly remembered that her own results hadn't come back yet.
She had been so entirely focused on Boyd over the past two days that she'd completely forgotten about her own test.
The chances were incredibly slim, but it was still a glimmer of hope.
She glanced back at the bed, then quietly slipped out of the room.
Just as she reached the doctor's office, the door swung open, and Director Wylde practically sprinted out.
They nearly collided. When Wylde saw her, his eyes lit up. "Perfect timing! I was just coming to find you!"
Ivy blinked in surprise. "What is it?"
"You're a match! Do you have any idea how astronomical those odds are?! It's one in tens of thousands! But you match!" Director Wylde, usually the picture of clinical composure, was practically vibrating with excitement, his words tumbling out in a rush.
Ivy froze. How could she even begin to describe the emotional whiplash of the past few hours?
From the highest peak, plummeting to the lowest valley, and now shooting straight back into the stratosphere.
After a moment of blank shock, an overwhelming wave of pure joy crashed into her. She swallowed hard before asking for confirmation. "Are you saying... I'm a match for Jamison?"
"Yes! Here's the report, take a look!" Wylde handed her the paperwork, pointing out the details. "Your results aren't quite as perfect as Boyd's—he and Jamison shared the exact same blood type. You two have different blood types. Jamison is Type A, and you're Type O. But a Type A patient can accept a Type O liver, so it's perfectly viable!"
Ivy stared at the report, Director Wylde's words washing over her. Happiness bubbled up inside her chest, warm and overflowing.
"Okay. I understand. I understand..." She nodded frantically, her eyes shining with unshed tears.
Director Wylde beamed. "Since you're a match, we need to prep for surgery. Talk it over with your husband and pick a date. You'll need to stay in the hospital for about ten days post-op, and you'll require at least six months of strict rest afterward. So, you'll need to figure out childcare and get everything sorted ahead of time."
"Right. Yes, I'll handle it." Ivy was so high on adrenaline she barely processed the logistics.
It wasn't until Wylde turned to leave that reality suddenly crashed down on her. She quickly called out to him.
"What's wrong? Do you have a question?" Wylde stopped and looked back.
At noon, lunch was delivered from the estate.
As Ivy and Jamison ate, they FaceTimed the kids.
The two little boys practically fought for screen time, eager to chatter away with their dad. Hearing their bright, infectious laughter brought a genuine warmth back to Jamison's face.
Ivy sat lost in thought, glancing at him several times but failing to find a natural way to broach the subject without raising suspicions.
Ultimately, she realized she couldn't pull this off alone. She needed the family to help her run the con. Only then would he believe it.
So, after lunch, right before Jamison's nap, Ivy told him she was heading home to check on the kids and left the hospital.
But she didn't go to the Ludwig estate. Instead, she called Thad.
"Thad, I need to see you in person. I have something critical to discuss. Are you free right now?"
Thad replied immediately. "I'm at the office. Should I come to you, or are you coming here?"
"I just left the hospital. I'll come to you. And if Davina is free, could you ask her to join us?"
Trusting Ivy's judgment, Thad didn't press for details and agreed immediately. "Of course. I'll call her right now."
