The War God Alpha's Arranged Bride (Evelyn and Alexander) novel Chapter 107

**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 107: Compiling The Evidence**

[Evelyn’s POV]

A wave of relief washed over me as the conversation shifted gears, and I eagerly seized the opportunity for a distraction. The relentless weight of my worries had been somewhat alleviated by the flickering hope that Alexander and Oliver would finally uncover the elusive evidence they had been pursuing.

“Yes!” I exclaimed, my voice bubbling with excitement.

I observed Alexander’s face transform, a smug satisfaction settling in, which allowed my own anxieties to begin to ebb away.

“Tell me, what did you find?” I urged, my curiosity piqued.

“Do you remember how, before all of this chaos unfolded, Oliver mentioned a secret contact?” he asked, his eyes gleaming with the thrill of discovery. I nodded vigorously, eager for him to elaborate. “Well, this secret contact managed to trace the car back to an old junkyard located miles away. Interestingly, the place is still operated by one of the original managers who just so happened to be there the day Michael and Caroline brought the car in.”

My eyebrows shot up in disbelief. “Michael and Caroline?” The revelation sent a jolt through me, as I struggled to reconcile the image of Caroline with such shady dealings. I must have worn my skepticism on my sleeve, for Alexander quickly sensed my doubt and rushed to clarify.

“From what we gathered, Caroline didn’t actually get out of the car when they arrived,” he explained, a hint of reassurance in his tone.

While the information was undeniably intriguing, I found myself grappling with how any of this could serve as concrete evidence in our case. My brows furrowed slightly as I bit my bottom lip, lost in thought.

“Alexander, how does any of this help the case? I’m genuinely glad you tracked down the car, but it doesn’t exactly point the finger at anyone in particular,” I questioned, my voice laced with uncertainty.

His light chuckle dispelled the remnants of my worry, momentarily easing my tension.

“Patience,” he replied, a single word that sent a shiver down my spine, reminding me of the intimate moments we had shared just the night before.

“You’ll see how everything connects,” he continued, his voice steady. “You were right about the car’s condition. The brakes had indeed been cut. And not only that, but all forms of emergency communication had been stripped away as well. Anyone can sever brake lines, but it takes a skilled professional to dismantle the communication system.”

I tilted my head, intrigued. “A professional? Are you implying that Michael specifically had the car taken to a shop for these modifications?”

His smile broadened, revealing a glimmer of triumph. “Exactly.”

I couldn’t suppress a scoff of disbelief. “That’s absurd. What kind of self-respecting mechanic would ever agree to make such dangerous alterations to a vehicle?”

“Fortunately, Michael found the one mechanic in the area who has a heavy conscience and a penchant for bending the rules,” he replied, a hint of dark humor in his voice. “After our trip to the junkyard, we were directed to Matteo’s Mechanic shop. The guy looked guilty even before we asked him anything.”

Imagining the weight of that guilt was almost unbearable.

But why would this man have consented to such reckless actions if he was fully aware of their implications?

“Oliver and I approached him calmly, presenting the same photo of Michael we had shown the previous mechanic. Matteo looked as if he might collapse at any moment,” he recounted. “The man crumbled under the pressure and confessed to having argued with Michael about not wanting to go through with the alterations.”

“But what ultimately convinced him?”

“Money,” he replied simply.

Ah, the lengths we go to for money.

As twisted as it was, a small part of me felt a flicker of sympathy for this mechanic. Sometimes, life spirals out of control, leaving us with no choice but to bend to the demands of others.

“That must have been incredibly difficult for him,” I remarked, my voice softening. “Not that I condone his actions, but I can only imagine the reasons that led him to capitulate to Michael’s demands.”
