The War God Alpha's Arranged Bride (Evelyn and Alexander) novel Chapter 108

**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 108: A Visit To The Holding Cell**

In that moment, as he stood within the familiar yet imposing walls of his home, Alexander experienced a sensation he hadn’t felt in what seemed like an eternity—a profound sense of freedom. For the first time in countless months, he was unshackled, liberated from the burdens of pretense and deceit.

To those he cherished, he was no longer a man cloaked in shadows. He had shed the disguise that had become a second skin, revealing his true self. Within the sanctuary of his own abode, he could roam about freely, unmasked and unguarded, embracing the reality of who he was.

As he observed Evelyn’s reaction upon hearing the full narrative of his concealed existence, he couldn’t help but notice the way her features contorted with confusion and concern. Her brow furrowed, and her eyes, usually so bright, clouded over with a storm of bewilderment. It pained him to see the sadness that flickered across her face, the disappointment that he had withheld the truth for far too long.

Though Evelyn’s demeanor suggested a level of understanding, the dismay etched into her expression was unmistakable. It was a reminder of the chasm that had formed between them, a gap created by his silence.

Last night had been one of the most exhilarating experiences of his life, and now, an insatiable hunger stirred within him. He craved more—more moments shared with her, more of her laughter, more of her warmth. The taste of her desire lingered in his mind, a sweet and intoxicating memory that would forever be etched in his consciousness.

He fought the urge to replay the soft, yearning sounds that had escaped her lips, knowing full well the risk of igniting his own desire in the process. This was neither the time nor the place for such thoughts, no matter how enticing.

After they finished breakfast, Alexander had casually mentioned his intention to head to the office to wrap up some work, promising they would reunite later. Yet, as he walked away, he bypassed the office entirely, his feet instinctively guiding him down the long, dimly lit corridor of the manor.

It wasn’t a complete lie; he did plan to attend to some paperwork eventually. But at that moment, there was a pressing matter that required his immediate attention—one that Evelyn was better off not knowing about.

He arrived at a heavy steel door, its surface cold and unyielding, secured by a formidable padlock. With a steady hand, he retrieved the key from his pocket, inserting it into the lock with a decisive turn. The door creaked open, revealing a spiraling staircase that descended into the depths of the estate—an area shrouded in secrecy, known to few, especially not to Evelyn.

The air thickened with an unsettling chill as he ventured down into the darkness. The absence of windows left the space cloaked in shadows, illuminated only by the flickering light of wooden torches, which were sporadically placed along the walls. This was a place rarely visited, a holding cell that had only recently become necessary due to dire circumstances.

At the end of the corridor, he reached the final door, a massive structure that loomed ominously before him. With a swift motion, he unlatched the heavy metal lock and pushed the door open, revealing a disheveled and visibly agitated Michael, his stepbrother.

As Alexander stepped into the dimly lit cell, Michael turned, his expression twisting into one of contempt. “And here I thought I was losing my mind,” he spat, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Of course, you found a way to escape the fate of a lifetime in a wheelchair.”

Raising an eyebrow, Alexander replied coolly, “I have some news for you, Michael. I was never paralyzed to begin with.”

Michael’s incredulity was palpable. “So, what? You chose to live as a pathetic cripple for months?”

“Exactly. It was a ruse that fooled everyone, especially the one who orchestrated the car crash.”

At that revelation, Alexander watched as his stepbrother’s posture stiffened, a flicker of discomfort crossing his features. “You do realize that the moment I’m released from here, I’m going straight to the King to file charges for wrongful imprisonment?”

Alexander couldn’t suppress a laugh, the sound echoing off the cold walls of the cell. Was he serious? Did he genuinely believe he had committed no crime in his deranged state?
