Chapter 118: Delusions
[Third-Person’s POV]
“Are you nursing a hangover? The doctor was clear about the dangers of drinking during pregnancy, yet here we are,” Leonard shot at his increasingly unstable wife, his voice laced with frustration.
He regarded Isabella with a mixture of disbelief and concern, as if she had finally crossed the line into madness. This wasn’t the first time such chaos had erupted in their home, but the nature of her claims that morning was particularly outrageous, even by their tumultuous standards.
Typically, Leonard would only half-listen as Isabella rambled on about trivial matters while he buried himself in the morning newspaper. Their conversations rarely ventured beyond the latest societal gossip or the newest dress that she and Samantha simply had to have.
But that day was different.
It was the morning after Evelyn had inexplicably vanished without a word. Leonard found it strange that his daughter would just up and leave without any notice. Given her fierce determination to support her brother during his recovery, he had expected her visit to last much longer.
Deep down, Leonard knew he should have been more vigilant regarding Edward’s condition—or lack of improvement. Since the accident that had nearly claimed his son’s life, he felt as if he had taken another devastating blow to his already fragile psyche. His sense of purpose in leading their pack had dwindled, leaving behind only a gnawing worry about their financial stability.
It was the reason figures like the Alpha King and Alexander were so revered by him. Yet, despite his admiration for those men, Leonard had reached his limit with Isabella’s incessant chatter.
Isabella glared at him, her eyes blazing with indignation. “I know what I saw! Alexander Kingston is not paralyzed!”
Leonard shook his head, unwilling to entertain her absurd claims any longer.
“I’m not insane!” she yelled, her voice echoing off the walls of the dining room.
“You said it yourself; it was late, and you were exhausted,” he countered, his tone dismissive. “I suspect your mind was just playing tricks on you. Or maybe you were dreaming, and none of it happened.”
Isabella clenched her jaw, biting her tongue until it stung. She realized she had no solid ground to argue from, especially since she couldn’t fully articulate what had transpired that night without implicating herself in a far more sinister plot.
Ever since Leonard had taken a keen interest in Evelyn’s well-being, she knew he wouldn’t react well to the news of her being drugged.
Initially, Isabella had never intended to administer the aphrodisiac to Evelyn. It had been meant for her own daughter, whose inability to maintain a healthy relationship with her husband was becoming a liability.
The idea hadn’t even crossed her mind… until Michael’s unexpected arrival that evening after dinner. In that moment, Isabella’s mind began to concoct a plan. If she couldn’t help her daughter, perhaps she could find a way to undermine Evelyn instead.
With deft hands, she had slipped the drug into Evelyn’s tea while her back was turned, eagerly anticipating the outcome. She convinced herself that Evelyn’s hasty departure from the house was merely an attempt to escape her own embarrassment.
Yet, the swirling thoughts about Alexander left her feeling frayed. If only she had some tangible proof to support her claims; she could have sworn she had seen Alexander rise from his wheelchair and walk across the room.
But later, when she had returned to investigate, the wheelchair was mysteriously absent. With no evidence of Alexander’s presence, she was left with no choice but to abandon the issue entirely.
To make matters worse, there was also no indication that her little scheme with Evelyn had succeeded. Both Evelyn and Michael had vanished, and while Isabella wasn’t particularly thrilled about her stepdaughter’s presence, it was uncharacteristic of Evelyn to leave without a proper goodbye.
Nevertheless, Isabella was certain that once word spread about Edward’s deteriorating health, Evelyn would rush back to mend the rift.
At least, she mused, things hadn’t been a complete loss.
