**TITLE: Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 119: An Unpleasant Connection**
[Third-Person’s POV]
Alexander found himself ensnared at a metaphorical crossroads, a place where decisions loomed large and consequences threatened to spill over.
For days, he had meticulously gathered every piece of evidence he planned to wield against Michael in court, each document a small victory against the man who had wronged him. Yet, lurking beneath the surface was a different, more pressing concern that threatened to rear its head at any moment.
Why, he pondered anxiously, had there been no public revelation about the truth of his condition? The world still believed him to be paralyzed, a state he had crafted with the utmost care. But after revealing the reality of his physical state to Isabella, he had expected her to rush to the nearest news outlet, eager to sell what could only be described as the hottest scoop of the decade.
The days had passed, and instead of finding his face splashed across the front pages of every newspaper, he was met with silence. A heavy mix of gratitude and anxiety settled in his chest—was this a miracle or a ticking time bomb?
If there was one lesson he had learned from his interactions with Isabella, it was that she was as unpredictable as his own stepmother, Caroline. Both women shared an insatiable ambition that often bordered on ruthless. Once they set their sights on a goal, nothing could deter them; they would bulldoze through any obstacle in their path.
Now, with Isabella privy to his most closely guarded secret, Alexander found himself in a precarious position. Would she choose to overlook this information, or would she leverage it for her own gain? The thought sent a shiver down his spine, and he feared the latter was far more likely.
Who was to say that Isabella wasn’t simply biding her time, waiting for the perfect moment to exploit this crucial piece of intel?
She was nothing like her daughter in that respect, and that realization gnawed at him.
Something had to be done—he needed to regain control of the narrative before it spiraled out of his grasp.
With a determined sigh, Alexander redirected his focus back to the case file sprawled across his desk, his mind racing with possibilities and strategies.
Isabella wasn’t the only one he had to worry about; Michael was also in the know.
How on earth could he face the court with Michael potentially revealing that he could walk? That it had all been an elaborate deception?
The thought of explaining himself to the Alpha King was the last thing he wanted to entertain. Despite everything, Michael remained a formidable threat—perhaps the greatest of them all. Eventually, he would have to confront the truth of his physical condition, but doing so now would not serve his interests.
He was at an impasse, and a decision loomed.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Startled from his thoughts, he glanced up as Oliver stepped through the door, a large folder of notes clutched tightly in his hands. The expression on Oliver’s face sent a fresh wave of anxiety coursing through Alexander.
While he had been focusing on his case against Michael, he had assigned Oliver a critical task: to uncover any details regarding the car crash that had resulted in casualties—most importantly, those concerning Evelyn’s brother.
“What did you find?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper, bracing himself for the answer.
Oliver exhaled slowly, placing the folder down on the desk with a heaviness that matched the atmosphere. “It wasn’t easy,” he began, his tone indicating the weight of his findings. “For some reason, many news outlets seemed eager to downplay the idea of any other casualties. They wanted to keep the focus solely on you. But after extensive digging, something unfortunate came to light.”
Oh, God.
Deep down, Alexander had always suspected that Edward’s involvement in the accident was more than mere coincidence. He didn’t want to be right about this; the implications were too dire for his comfort.
Oliver opened the folder, revealing a small, clipped-out news article titled ‘Motorcyclist Entangled in Freak Car Accident.’
As Alexander read the words ‘Edward Silverwood,’ his heart plummeted. The article was vague, lacking crucial details about the car that had collided with Edward’s motorcycle, leaving him with an unsettling feeling.
