**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 126: A Public Appearance**
As the final verdict echoed throughout the courtroom, a palpable weight lifted from Alexander’s shoulders, as if a great burden had been unshackled from his very being.
They had succeeded.
Michael had been sentenced, and now he was being escorted away through the discreet side doors. Unlike the composed figure he had once been, the man was now thrashing wildly, desperately seeking the attention of any soul who might listen.
“You can’t do this to me!” he shouted, his voice cracking with desperation.
“Do you know who I am?!”
“This is a fucking mistake! I’m not crazy!!”
“You’re all going to regret this!!”
The guards, firm and unyielding, gripped Michael tightly, ensuring he was removed from the main room without further incident. As the door slammed shut behind him, Alexander’s gaze flickered to Evelyn, who flinched at the abrupt sound, her body tensing in response.
He held his stare on her, hoping to see some semblance of relief in her expression. But the tension remained etched on her face, her features pinched and strained from the tumultuous events that had just unfolded.
A pang of sympathy shot through Alexander’s heart. This ordeal had been anything but easy for her. Evelyn was not one to harbor vindictive thoughts; she was not the type to intentionally harm others or tarnish their reputations—unlike some individuals he could name.
When she had first approached him and Oliver with the unsettling idea of branding Michael as ‘crazy,’ it had been clear to Alexander that this was a struggle for her. He recognized that being cruel was simply not part of her nature, and he appreciated that about her deeply.
It was one of the many reasons he held her in such high regard.
Now that the court case had concluded, all Alexander longed for was to whisk her away from this place and help her unwind, to soothe her troubled spirit. But alas, their responsibilities were not yet fulfilled.
As they made their way out, Alexander and Evelyn took a moment to express their gratitude and bid farewell to both the Alpha King and the judge. Just as they stepped outside, Oliver joined them, reaching for the file folder that Evelyn clutched tightly in her hands.
“Just a reminder,” he said, his tone both serious and encouraging, “you’re about to face the press. It’s just a handful of reporters eager to cover this groundbreaking story. Alexander will handle most of the questions, so don’t feel pressured to say much, Evelyn.”
This part of the process was crucial; they needed to maintain the narrative that Alexander was still paralyzed. It was essential for the photographers to capture multiple clear images of him in this state.
Evelyn nodded, her expression a mix of determination and anxiety. Seizing the moment, Alexander intertwined his fingers with hers, leading them both through the main doors. The scene before them was overwhelming—a throng of people awaited, filling the path that led directly to their vehicle.
“This is far more than just a few,” Evelyn murmured under her breath, her apprehension palpable.
Squeezing her hand gently, Alexander sought to reassure her. “It’s going to be alright,” he whispered, as they were engulfed by the crowd. Cameras flashed, and reporters surged forward, vying for a chance to pose their questions.
“Alpha Alexander, is it true that you just came from a private court case to have your own stepbrother imprisoned?” one reporter shouted, her voice cutting through the chaos.
With his characteristic stoicism, Alexander replied, his voice steady and unwavering. “Michael Kingston has been a threat to the public ever since he attempted to have me assassinated several months ago.”
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
“Are you implying that the car crash that paralyzed you was orchestrated by Michael Kingston?” another reporter pressed, incredulity lacing her tone.
“That is correct,” Alexander confirmed, his expression resolute. “While he failed in his mission, there were others who lost their lives, and some who continue to fight for theirs even now.”
Suddenly, the crowd’s focus shifted toward Evelyn, and she felt her stomach drop.
