The War God Alpha's Arranged Bride (Evelyn and Alexander) novel Chapter 127

**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 127: A Shocking Proposal**

[Evelyn’s POV]

The warm water enveloped me in the bath, a soothing balm against the turmoil swirling within. It was a small reprieve, a temporary escape from the chaos of my thoughts. At least the tension in my muscles began to ease, and some of the anxiety I had been bottling up dissipated like steam rising from the water. But, oh, how I wished it could also quell the storm of emotions that seemed to shift and swirl like the water around me.

When I had decided to share my feelings with Alexander, it hadn’t been to burden him. Yet, I could sense his unease in the way his fingers glided hesitantly over my skin, each touch laced with tension. He was the kind of person who always sought solutions, a fixer by nature. But deep down, I feared that in my situation, no solution existed.

It gnawed at me, the guilt of bringing my troubles into his world. This was my burden to bear, not his.

After a few moments, Alexander stepped out, giving me the space to gather myself in the bathroom. Once I was dressed and ready, I emerged to find him already nestled on his side of the bed, engrossed in the screen of his tablet. I tiptoed over to my side, climbed onto the mattress, and slipped beneath the covers, feeling the fabric envelop me like a warm embrace.

The weight of exhaustion pressed heavily on my eyelids, and I sank into the bedding, feeling as if it might swallow me whole. How could I be this tired? After our return from the courthouse, I had attempted to follow my usual routine, but the day had drained me in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Physically, it had been a breeze, but emotionally? That was an entirely different beast.

Suddenly, I felt Alexander’s gentle fingers brush through my hair, a soothing gesture that stirred something deep within me.

“Go to sleep,” he murmured softly, his voice a calming presence in the dim light. “I’ll be awake for a little while longer.”

I surrendered to the heaviness of my eyelids, allowing sleep to claim me… for a fleeting ten minutes. Just as I began to drift into that blissful realm of dreams, my body jolted awake, panic surging through me. Confusion clouded my thoughts as every muscle tensed, and I struggled to find that comfortable position I had just enjoyed.

Alexander, ever attuned to me, noticed my sudden movement and turned, concern etched on his face.

“What’s wrong? I thought you were asleep,” he remarked, his brow furrowing with worry.

“I was…” I croaked out, feeling the remnants of sleep slip through my fingers like sand. Good grief, not only had I been shaken awake, but I was breathless, too!

Despite the lingering drowsiness, a nagging thought tugged at the back of my mind, refusing to let me fully relax.

Alexander set his tablet aside and shifted to face me, his gaze steady and searching.

“Tell me what you’re feeling,” he urged gently. “I know you’re tired; after everything that happened this morning, you have every right to be. But something else is clearly weighing on you.”

“I think you’re right,” I admitted reluctantly.

Perhaps there was a lot more swirling in my mind than I was willing to confront. Michael had been a significant problem, yes, but he was just one of many challenges we were destined to face.

Though he was temporarily out of the picture, the shadow of his mother loomed large. Caroline was a ruthless force, a mirror image of Isabella, but with far more influence and connections.

Once the details of this entire saga hit the media, I could only imagine the lengths she would go to retaliate. She was undoubtedly still fixated on seizing control over the pack’s financial accounts, regardless of Wendy’s firm declaration that it would never happen.

If Alexander’s assessment of Michael was accurate—that his every thought and action was merely a reflection of Caroline’s will—then we were certainly in for a tumultuous ride ahead.

With a tenderness that sent warmth coursing through me, Alexander reached out, his hand cradling my cheek. “Tell me.”

“You see today as a victory for having dealt with Michael… I can’t shake the feeling that we’ve just opened a floodgate to a myriad of new problems,” I confessed, my voice trembling with uncertainty.

His brows knitted together in thought. “That’s a valid concern. Are you afraid you won’t be strong enough to face them as they arise?” he asked, his tone light yet serious.
