**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 178: The King’s Ire**
Caroline found herself utterly speechless, her mind swirling in a tempest of conflicting emotions. It was as if a great storm had swept through her, leaving her disoriented and gasping for clarity. The moment Alexander strode confidently through the doors of the main reception room, her heart sank, and her faith in the King fractured like fragile glass.
How could this be? How could it possibly be true that after all this time, Alexander had never truly been paralyzed? The evidence was undeniable; he walked into the room with the same infuriating confidence that had always marked his presence.
As she stood there, hidden in the shadows, her heart raced when Luna, that irritating woman, caught sight of her. Caroline braced herself, knowing that the last thing she needed was for Luna to meddle in her affairs.
She had half-expected Alexander to flaunt his arrogance in the wake of this revelation, but Evelyn’s reaction surprised her even more. The first time Caroline had encountered Evelyn, she had been nothing more than a timid little mouse, completely overwhelmed by the circumstances. But now, the tables had turned dramatically. Evelyn had shed her meekness and emerged as a force to be reckoned with. She wielded her words like weapons, striking with a precision that would put even the most seasoned Lunas to shame.
Evelyn carried herself with a surprising poise, yet beneath her carefully crafted facade lay a creature ready to unleash her fury. Caroline couldn’t help but wonder if the brush with death had ignited a fierce resilience within her.
As the meeting drew to a close, Caroline felt an urgent need to escape, to flee from the impending storm of the King’s wrath. She had already delivered the devastating news; she had no desire to be caught in the crossfire of his anger again.
She had tried to convince him that the rumor of Alexander’s miraculous recovery was too absurd to be true. Yet, her entire perception of reality shifted when she saw her stepson moving about freely, unscathed and undeniably alive.
“Caroline!”
The thundering call of Gregory, the King, reverberated through the room, sending a jolt of fear through her. She squeezed her eyes shut for a moment, bracing herself for the storm that was about to unfold.
“Yes, Your Majesty?” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
As the King descended from his throne, an oppressive tension filled the air. His eyes burned with fury as he approached her, each step heavy with unspoken accusations.
“Would you be so kind as to join me in my private study for a moment?” he demanded, his voice a low growl.
“Of course,” she muttered, her heart sinking as dread washed over her.
Once they were alone in the confines of his private quarters, the King wasted no time. He slammed the door behind them with a force that made Caroline flinch.
“What the hell!” he roared. “How is it that you and your imbecile son managed to botch such a simple plan?!”
“Believe me, I am just as shocked and furious as you are about this,” she replied, her voice steady despite the turmoil within.
“It’s bad enough that your foolish scheme failed to eliminate him when it should have, but to discover that he wasn’t even in that car when it crashed is absolutely unacceptable!” he seethed, his frustration palpable.
Caroline exhaled slowly, her brows knitting together in contemplation.
“Well, tell me, Your Majesty, what do you propose I do that won’t land me in a cell right next to my son? Should I simply pull a gun on him and shoot him point-blank?”
Gregory’s expression twisted with disdain. “I’d watch my tone if I were you, Caroline. You keep making promises that you can’t possibly keep. Why shouldn’t I just throw you in prison alongside that brainless son of yours?”
“Because I’m still your only link to potentially gaining control over Alexander’s army—”
