The War God Alpha's Arranged Bride (Evelyn and Alexander) novel Chapter 179

**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 179: Preparing For The Danger**

Fiona’s heart raced, a wild drumbeat of anxiety echoing in her chest. With every passing moment, the tension coiled tighter within her, a serpent of dread that threatened to suffocate her.

No, it couldn’t be true. Caroline must have been mistaken in her belief that Fiona could be so careless, so foolish as to leave behind something so crucial.

The events of the previous night felt like a chaotic whirlwind, a blur of emotions and actions that spiraled out of control. She had almost declined Isabella’s invitation to the Silverswood Estate, the very thought of confronting Evelyn sending chills down her spine. Yet, when Isabella had promised her a chance to cleanse herself of the bitterness and animosity she harbored against Evelyn, it had sounded almost like a dream—a tantalizing opportunity that was too good to be real.

But then, Isabella had managed to subdue Evelyn, and Fiona’s curiosity had ignited. The prospect of finally avenging herself against the woman who had turned her existence into a waking nightmare was irresistible. The idea of unleashing the tidal wave of anger she had bottled up for so long was intoxicating.

How could she possibly let such an opportunity slip through her fingers?

Without a moment’s hesitation, she had snatched her medical bag and dashed toward the estate. Her profession, though often associated with healing, had desensitized her to the sight of blood. As Isabella unleashed her fury on Evelyn, Fiona had felt a surge of excitement as she reached into her bag, retrieving a unique blade she had acquired during one of her conferences out of state. It was a tool she had never had the chance to wield before, and the thrill of using something new only heightened her anticipation.

But now, the thought that she might have left that blade behind sent her spiraling into panic.

She tore back to her quarters, rummaging through her medical bag with frantic urgency, her heart plummeting as she realized the blade was nowhere to be found. Each passing second felt like an eternity, her stomach twisting in despair.

“No…”

A soft, mocking voice interrupted her thoughts. Caroline stood at the doorway, her lips pursed and her brow arched in curiosity.

“What’s the matter?” she asked, a hint of amusement dancing in her tone. “Misplace something important?”

Fiona spun around, her frustration boiling over into a snarl. “This isn’t a joke! I must have left that blade behind when we were escaping!”

Caroline’s expression shifted slightly, her eyes narrowing. “Well, I certainly hope you have a plan in mind,” she remarked coolly. “From what I understand, both Evelyn and Alexander are aware of that blade. The moment they decide to issue a warrant for your arrest, you’ll find yourself behind bars. Unless…”

Fiona’s interest piqued, a flicker of hope igniting within her. “Unless what?”

“Unless you can somehow retrieve that blade before they make their move.”

It seemed like the only logical course of action, but Fiona felt an overwhelming sense of dread at the thought of re-entering Kingston Hall.

There was no doubt that Alexander had already tested the blade for fingerprints. Even if she attempted to contact him under some pretense, the Alpha would likely tear her to shreds without a second thought.

“I’ll figure something out,” she asserted, determination lacing her voice. “I have to get that blade back.”

From Evelyn’s perspective, the atmosphere had hardly calmed since Alexander’s summons to court. If anything, the drama had intensified, capturing the public’s attention like a moth to a flame. Everyone seemed eager to unravel the story behind his deception, their curiosity insatiable.

It appeared that a few journalists had caught wind of Alexander’s court appearance, clamoring for details about the nature of the meeting. Naturally, they had snapped countless photos of the two of us entering and exiting the palace, their flashes illuminating our every move.

The confusion and shock surrounding the situation was almost enough to elicit a smile from me. Alexander wasn’t the only one the public was eager to interrogate; we had already received numerous requests from local news outlets, all wanting to know why I was the one hidden behind his former facade.

A wave of bashfulness washed over me. “I know, I’m sorry. So much has been happening lately. As you can see, I’ve just started to come to terms with my scars. Alexander has made it clear that they don’t bother him, and I’ve begun developing a serum that could help heal them.”

Both Wendy and Nina were taken aback by my revelation, their expressions a mix of astonishment and curiosity.

The conversation naturally flowed toward the events that had unfolded during Alexander’s time at the palace. When I mentioned Caroline’s presence, Wendy scoffed, her eyes rolling in disdain.

“Of course that nuisance was there. If I had to guess, I’d say she was the King’s inside contact, the one who could link him to Alexander.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if that were true,” I replied thoughtfully. “I just hope I didn’t make a mistake by confronting Caroline the way I did.”

The more I reflected on the situation, the more I began to worry that I had inadvertently given Caroline the upper hand by revealing my knowledge of Fiona’s involvement and my potential to apprehend her.

Wendy shot me a cautious glance. “Unfortunately, you’ve given Caroline the opportunity to act. Even though she wasn’t directly involved in your attack, she could still very well be in contact with Fiona.”

I sank back into my chair, feeling the weight of uncertainty settle over me.

Wendy reached across the small table, gently placing her hand over mine. “I heard some of the soldiers have approached you, offering to train you,” she said. “I genuinely believe you should accept their offer. I can’t predict whether Fiona or Caroline will retaliate, but until either Isabella or Fiona is convicted, you remain at risk.”

With that thought, any hesitation I had about training vanished.

“Well, it looks like I’m going to start training,” I murmured, determination swelling within me.
