Chapter 23
Alexander and Caroline stared at me, their faces a mixture of surprise and disbelief as I shared the unexpected information. Wendy quickly called out to one of the staff members nearby.
“Find Katherine. Bring her here immediately,” she ordered.
Grandma Wendy explained that Katherine was the one in charge of revising the ledger. If anyone could decipher the confusing transactions, it was definitely her. Moments later, Katherine appeared, her expression clouded with concern. Without hesitation, Wendy handed her the ledger to inspect her own work.
As Katherine scanned the pages, her cheeks flushed a deep crimson. “Oh my… I… I can’t understand how these errors could have happened—or how they went unnoticed for so long,” she stammered.
She excused herself politely, retreating to a quiet corner to carefully rework the numbers and cross-check every receipt. Throughout the entire process, Wendy’s eyes sparkled with unwavering enthusiasm.
“Evelyn,” she said warmly, turning to me, “I truly believe you will make an exceptional Luna. From the moment I heard about your reputation, I sensed something special in you.” She smiled kindly. “I’m ready to teach you everything you need to know. Anyone can appear beautiful, but what really matters is understanding and connecting with the pack.”
Caroline’s face tightened, a mixture of anger and embarrassment flickering across her features.
Taking advantage of the moment, I reached into my bag and pulled out a few carefully wrapped gifts I had brought for the occasion. Knowing Wendy hadn’t been feeling well lately, I’d packed several varieties of herbs and tea leaves, all grown by my pack and known for their healing properties.
“These were cultivated specifically by my pack,” I explained gently, holding out the bundles. “We’ve been growing these plants for generations. Whenever someone falls ill, these are the first remedies they receive to help them recover.”
“How thoughtful of you,” Wendy said, her eyes softening.
Before I could respond, Fiona interjected with a sharp tone, her voice dripping with disdain. “I’m afraid I can’t accept such unknown remedies,” she said with a dismissive tut. “Loose herbs like these—there’s no telling how sanitary they really are.”
I was about to defend the herbs when Wendy cut me off firmly.
