Chapter 27
“Tell me,” Alexander demanded, his voice firm and unyielding.
“Ask Nina,” Fiona replied sharply.
Panic suddenly overtook Fiona’s face; the color seemed to drain away, leaving her looking pale and unsettled.
“Alexander,” I began, trying to keep my voice steady despite the tension thickening the air, “I knew you’d be busy here—you told me as much this morning before we left the dining room.” He gave a brief nod, silently encouraging me to carry on. “You were aware that Nina and I had arranged to meet with a few members from my former pack to discuss the seeds Grandma Wendy and I planned to plant. Before I could hand them over to Wendy, Fiona approached us in the corridor. She said— and I quote—‘Alexander reached out to me to inform you that he wants you to come meet him at the camps today.’”
Alexander slowly turned his gaze toward Fiona, his eyes narrowing into a sharp glare. Fiona, however, refused to meet his stare, keeping her eyes fixed firmly on the floor.
“I honestly couldn’t believe that you had called for me,” I admitted, feeling the weight of disbelief settle over me. “I had my doubts. You and I are still navigating this whole marriage thing, and I didn’t want to come across as ignoring your orders… so I followed her out here.”
We all watched as Alexander motioned for Oliver to lower his weapon. The tension eased slightly, allowing a much-needed breath to fill my lungs.
Alexander’s expression, however, remained skeptical. “The guards—”
“Had no idea why I was here, or even who I was,” I cut in quickly. “That should have been the second big clue that I probably shouldn’t have been out here at all. Once they let us through, Fiona told me I should help tidy up the place. But as I looked around, nothing seemed out of order.”
Fiona stood her ground stubbornly.
