Chapter 30
[Evelyn’s Perspective]
“Am I required to attend this event?” I asked, my voice tighter than I intended.
The question slipped out before I could stop it, leaving me feeling awkward and exposed.
Oliver gave a curt nod. “Yes, madam. Typically, Alpha’s daughters have the option to decline invitations. But for all Lunas, attendance is compulsory. Participating in gatherings like these is considered a key duty of any Luna.”
My stomach twisted into knots at that confirmation. Just great.
I swallowed hard, trying to push down the lump forming in my throat, and forced a smile to mask the anxiety bubbling beneath. As Oliver and Alexander discussed the necessary preparations for the event Alexander wanted to organize, I fought to steady my nerves.
Social events were never my forte. It wasn’t that I feared embarrassing myself, but I always felt like an outsider looking in. No matter how carefully I dressed or how I carried myself, the label of “wild child” clung to me like a shadow I couldn’t shake.
The mere thought of having to present myself in that setting sent a cold shiver down my spine. I found myself wondering if there was any way to wriggle out of attending.
Come on, Evelyn, I scolded myself silently. Alexander is finally opening up to you. His trust, your connection—it’s all on the line.
My inner voice was right. What message would it send to the pack if I skipped the Luna gathering? I needed to take a few deep breaths and find a way to manage this growing panic.
Alexander must have sensed my unease because, without a word, he reached out and placed a reassuring hand on the small of my back. I focused on the warmth of his touch, trying to calm the tightness rising in my chest.
Just as we arrived at his tent, Alexander suddenly stopped. Oliver and I exchanged a quick, questioning glance before turning back to him.
“Sir?” Oliver asked.
“Change of plans,” Alexander said firmly. “We’re heading back to the house. I want Nina fully briefed on the updated schedule. Cancel everything else on Evelyn’s agenda. She’s had a long day and needs to rest.”
Before I could object, Oliver was already nodding in agreement, and the three of us started walking back to the house. Aside from wanting to meet Wendy, I wasn’t even sure what else was planned for the day.
Still, Alexander was right—I was utterly drained. Since arriving at the camps, my emotions had been a rollercoaster, and I desperately needed a break.
When we stepped into the main hall, the staff greeted us promptly. I turned to head toward my bedroom but froze when I felt Alexander’s hand gently grasp my arm.
This was the second time he’d reached out to me today. What was he trying to say?
I lowered my eyes and found him looking back at me, one brow raised.
“What’s wrong?” he asked softly.
“Um…” I hesitated, biting my bottom lip in embarrassment. “It’s just… I’m not really comfortable attending events like this,” I admitted quietly.
A low hum of understanding came from Alexander.
“Your concern is understandable,” Oliver added gently. “These gatherings can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t feel confident talking to people of higher status.”
