**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
*By Sophia Reed*
**Chapter 300: Irene’s Rage**
**Judy’s POV**
The moment I became aware of my surroundings, I realized the eyes of everyone in the room were fixed on me, their expressions a mix of surprise and curiosity. My wolf was seething, a tempest of fury at the sight of Skyla practically draped over Gavin. It was a sight that ignited something primal within me, and I struggled to keep her at bay. She was a wild creature, demanding release, and I feared I might not be able to contain her much longer. This was new territory for me, and I couldn’t help but feel a knot of anxiety tighten in my stomach.
As I stood there, Matt’s hand encircled my wrist, grounding me in the chaos of my emotions. His touch was a lifeline, reminding me that even my wolf understood the presence of a child could not be overshadowed by rage. I inhaled deeply, feeling the air fill my lungs before I exhaled slowly, trying to regain my composure. My gaze locked onto Gavin’s, and the displeasure etched across his features sent a shiver down my spine. He leaned in toward Skyla, murmuring something that made her retreat, her hands nervously tucked at her sides, her eyes still darting between us. She didn’t seem pleased either, and the others around us wore expressions that hinted at amusement, as if they were spectators at a show they had long anticipated. They thrived on this kind of drama, and I could almost hear their collective thoughts, waiting for the next thrilling moment to unfold.
Before I could fully process the tension in the air, Gavin was at my side, his grip on my wrist firm as he pulled me away from the crowd and into the villa. I stumbled slightly, my feet struggling to keep pace with his determined stride. The anger radiating from him was palpable, a force that heightened my own anxiety. I had never encountered this level of fury from him before, and it was unsettling to know it was directed at me.
Once we reached a secluded part of the villa, he halted abruptly, releasing my wrist. The moment felt heavy with unspoken words as he turned to face me, his features twisted in anger.
“Is this arrangement of ours too much for you?” he asked, his voice taut with frustration.
His question caught me off guard, leaving me momentarily speechless.
“W…what?” I stammered, my confidence wavering under the weight of his gaze.
“Is this going to be an issue for you? Are you uncomfortable with other women being around me? If that’s the case, perhaps it’s best we revert to being just boss and employee. You can stay in the mansion, but—”
I interrupted him, urgency lacing my words. “I don’t know what happened! My wolf just… she lost her mind for a moment, but she’s fine now.”
He studied me in silence, his eyes searching my face for the truth.
“You made a fool of yourself out there,” he said finally, his tone sharp. “You knew they were filming today. Didn’t Irene inform you?”
A frown creased my brow as I pulled out my phone, realizing Irene hadn’t sent me a single message. She had been upset with me about something, but why would she deliberately sabotage me like this? I glanced back at Gavin, biting my lip in frustration.
“I must have missed her text,” I muttered, not wanting to implicate him in any family drama. I was keenly aware of the delicate balance I needed to maintain with the Landry family.
“I have to do damage control. If you’re going to act like a child, then you can leave. Conduct your tutoring sessions elsewhere,” he snapped, turning his back on me.
His words struck me like a slap, stinging with their harshness. I was left standing there, feeling utterly adrift as he walked away. Moments later, Matt appeared beside me, concern etched across his features.
“Are you okay, Judy?” he asked, his voice low and gentle.
I didn’t want him to see how shaken I was, so I forced a smile, though it felt more like a grimace.
“Yeah,” I replied, trying to sound upbeat. “How about we hit the gym for some training today?”
He nodded, and together we made our way to the villa’s gym. We spent the next hour pushing ourselves, the physical exertion helping to clear my mind. By the time we were finished, both of us were panting and exhausted, a welcome distraction from the chaos of my thoughts.
As I was leaving the gym, I caught sight of Irene emerging from the kitchen. The moment she spotted me, she froze, her frown deepening.
“Why didn’t you tell me they were filming on the training grounds today?” I asked, crossing my arms defensively.
“It must have slipped my mind,” she replied, shrugging nonchalantly as she started to move toward the stairs.
“Is there a problem between us, Irene?” I pressed, halting her in her tracks.
“Why would you think there’s a problem?” she asked, her tone deceptively innocent.
But I could see through her facade, the tension in the air thickening as I realized she was harboring resentment against me. My frown deepened, and I felt heat rise in my cheeks.
“What have I done to make you dislike me? I thought we were friends, but your actions suggest otherwise,” I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside.
