**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 61: Healing**

[Evelyn’s POV]

Where on earth am I?

As I gradually blinked awake, my mind struggled to piece together the reality around me. The dimness of the room enveloped me like a thick fog, obscuring my understanding of my surroundings. Yet, there was a strange sense of familiarity that tugged at the corners of my memory, hinting that I had found myself in this very predicament before.

This time, however, I felt a comforting weight encircling me, a warmth that made me feel both safe and secure. I attempted to stretch my fingers and gain a clearer sense of the situation, but my exploration quickly led me to discover a powerful, muscled arm firmly wrapped around my waist. Just then, a deep breath escaped from behind me, sending a shiver down my spine. My eyes widened in realization.

“What the—”

Before I could finish my thought, another heavy sigh mixed with a muffled groan reached my ears. My heart raced as the gravity of the moment struck me.

Oh my God. Am I in Alexander’s room… in his bed?!

How on earth did I end up here again? Why was I back in this intimate space?

Given that Alexander and I had recently moved into separate rooms, there was no logical reason for him to have summoned me back to his. Surely, this arrangement was more of an inconvenience for him than anything else.

What could he possibly want with me in my vulnerable state?

I attempted to sift through the haze of the past few days, but my memories were like scattered leaves in the wind—fragmented and elusive. I remembered the tea, the sensation of falling, and the scalding heat of the water wrapping around me. I could hear Alexander’s voice calling out from the depths of my subconscious. I was burning up, the world spinning around me like a chaotic storm…

And now? Now I found myself ensnared in Alexander’s embrace, utterly unsure of how to free myself. But then again, did I truly want to escape this cocoon of warmth?

This was a rare moment where he was showing me such unguarded affection—albeit while he slept. It felt surreal, almost magical. Unlike the times before when I felt like I was melting from sheer anxiety, now I was enveloped in a cozy warmth that filled me with contentment.

After everything we had endured together, could we not simply savor this fleeting moment of peace?

I desperately wanted to relish it. Yet, a nagging concern loomed over me. Something had gone awry with the tea mixture, and I had to uncover the truth about what transpired during my unsettling absence.

With painstaking slowness, I attempted to wriggle free from his tight grasp. I shifted my hips, inching toward the edge of the bed, but Alexander was quick to notice my intentions.

A startled gasp escaped my lips when I felt a firm tug from his arms, pulling me back against his chest. A low, menacing snarl rumbled from his throat.

“Stop moving,” he commanded, his voice rough.

My heart raced as I tried to reposition myself, only to be met with another disapproving growl. This time, Alexander’s grip tightened around my hip, anchoring me in place.

“Alexander—”

He leaned in closer, his breath warm against my ear. “If you keep rocking your hips against me, this morning is going to take a turn I didn’t intend.”

My eyes widened, a rush of heat flooding my cheeks. Now that he mentioned it, I could feel the unmistakable hardness pressing against my lower back.

A low rumble of approval escaped him. “Good girl,” he murmured, his tone dripping with satisfaction.

I squeezed my eyes shut, battling the urge to press back against him. Damn it, he knew exactly how to provoke me.

“I can’t stay in bed,” I protested weakly.

“Yes, you can,” he replied firmly. “Your body is fighting off the poison you ingested when you were testing the tea mixture.”

I wanted to focus on his explanation, but my thoughts kept drifting back to the way his fingers were brushing against the bare skin of my stomach. Oh, God. Did he even realize what he was doing?
