Chapter 9
That was precisely why Alexander had deliberately driven away the first two Lunas his family had arranged for him. It was far simpler to have them reject the King’s proposal than to face rejection himself. The idea of being the one to say no was unbearable to him.
Yet, it didn’t take long for him to realize that Evelyn was unlike anyone he had met before. He couldn’t stomach how her own family had treated her—especially on the very day of her wedding. He wanted to stay out of it, though. The more desperate Evelyn appeared about the marriage, the more he believed she would eventually surrender.
But she never did.
In fact, Evelyn had taken things a step further. She had stood up for Alexander—a man she barely knew, and who knew almost nothing about her—defending him against her own family’s harsh words. That unexpected loyalty caught him off guard.
He had never anticipated that Evelyn would be so determined to marry him, and that kiss they shared…
Though Alexander was reluctant to admit it, there had been an undeniable spark, a subtle chemistry that lingered between them. Part of him almost wished he had taken the risk to pull her closer and let that moment stretch longer.
“You’re not seriously planning to keep her, are you?” Oliver’s voice broke through Alexander’s thoughts.
Startled, Alexander shook himself free from his reverie. “No, of course not. I just wanted to help her out. I didn’t expect it to turn into such a mess.”
Oliver shrugged, his expression unreadable. “I suppose so. Her pack isn’t much help anyway. After all, your ex-girlfriend was…”
“The size of the pack doesn’t matter,” Alexander interrupted as they reached the study.
He rose to his feet abruptly, cutting Oliver off mid-sentence, and pushed the wheelchair aside without a second thought.
“Tell the servants to prepare bathwater in thirty minutes. Then have Evelyn meet me in my bedroom.”
