Chapter 5
Catherine stood at the front, several villagers crowding behind her.
She let out a piercing shriek, her face contorting as her eyes fixed on Josh’s hand gripping my arm.
“Caleb! What in God’s name do you think you’re doing?!”
The others exchanged uneasy glances, their whispers buzzing like angry hornets.
“Ain’t he her brother–in–law? And in broad daylight…”
“Would you look at that. Josh ain’t even cold in the ground, and they’re already carryin‘ on.”
Josh flinched the second he saw them. He dropped my arm like it was hot iron and scrambled over to Catherine. ” Baby, it’s not what it looks like. She came onto me.”
He pointed a dramatic, accusing finger right at me, playing the wounded party perfectly. “She’s confused me for Josh! Said she can’t manage without a man and expects me to take over his duties. Wants me to be responsible for both households!”
My stomach turned to lead.
His words, his look of disgust, the way he positioned himself as Catherine’s protector–it was a perfect, sickening echo of my past life.
Catherine’s face twisted into a mask of venom. Her voice sliced through the humid air. “Riley! You shameless bitch! Trying to steal my husband right in front of everyone! You filthy, desperate slut!”
Before I could get a word out, she lunged at me, her hand pulled back to strike.
“You homewrecker! I’ll scratch your eyes out! Let’s see how you try to steal my man then!”
The townsfolk murmured louder, a wall of judgment, but not a single one moved to intervene.
“So that’s her game. Chasin‘ her husband’s brother. No decency left.”
“Man’s not gone a week and she’s already itchin‘ for another. Makes you wonder what she was up to before.”
“Always seemed so loyal to Josh. Turns out she just wanted a man. Any man, in fact. What a disgrace.”
I sidestepped Catherine’s charge, my voice rising. “They’re lying! It was Josh who-”
He shouted over me, his voice booming as he pointed at the fresh, red handprint on his cheek. “She tried to seduce me! When I said no, she slapped me!”
The crowd’s disapproval deepened, their stares turning to ice.
Catherine seized the moment. She landed a stinging slap across my face, then burst into theatrical sobs. ” Everyone, look at her! Josh’s body isn’t even buried, and she’s throwing herself at Caleb! I’m carrying a child, and she’s trying to drive me to an early grave!”
