Chapter 199
Chapter 199
The Man Who Hears
Bryan stood beside the bed, a tablet in hand, his voice steady despite the weight pressing on his chest.
“Sir… Daven has already made his move,” he reported. “He keeps pestering Mark-trying to pull him to his side.”
No response.
Only the soft hum.
The steady, mechanical beeping that filled the room like a fragile heartbeat.
Damon lay motionless, his body still, his face pale but calm-as if he were only sleeping.
Bryan exhaled quietly and continued.
“Your wife and your son are safe,” he said. “Marlo has already been discharged, though he still needs medical care. Lila hired a nurse for him.”
Still nothing.
Just the machines.
Bryan’s grip tightened slightly around the tablet.
A flicker of guilt crossed his face.
I should have stopped him, he thought. I shouldn’t have let him meet Daven that day. I should have insisted he stayed in the office.
The regret sat heavy in his chest.
Behind him, the doctor spoke.
“Keep going.”
Bryan glanced back.
“He’s listening,” the doctor added, pointing at the monitor.
The screen flickered with subtle changes-tiny spikes, small movements that barely meant anything to an untrained eye.
But they were there.
“Every time you mention Lila’s name,” the doctor continued, “there’s a reaction.”
Bryan looked back at Damon.
For a moment-
hope.
Small, fragile, but real.
He smiled faintly.
“At least you can hear me, sir,” he said.
He shifted slightly, clearing his throat.
“Also… your mother has been asking about you,” he added. “I had to report to her. She’s worried.”
The machines continued their quiet rhythm.
“Lila still doesn’t know your condition,” Bryan went on. “My lips are sealed-just like you asked.”
He let out a soft breath.
“So when you wake up…” he said lightly, trying to ease the heaviness in the room, “you better add some incentives for me. I’m thinking at least a one-month vacation. I believe I deserve it.”
A small chuckle escaped him.

The doctor laughed softly as well.
“And me too,” the doctor added. “Don’t forget me.”
Bryan shook his head slightly, a faint smile forming.
“Oh-and one more thing,” the doctor continued, stepping closer to the bed. “You have to introduce me to your kid.”
He glanced at Damon, almost as if expecting a response.
“I might take him under my wing.”
Bryan let out a quiet laugh.
The room, for a brief moment, didn’t feel so heavy anymore.
But beneath it all-
the machines continued.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
And somewhere deep inside the silence-
Damon listened.
Waiting.
“I don’t think Damian will be interested in becoming a doctor,” Bryan said, glancing at the man lying motionless on the bed.
The doctor shrugged lightly. “Who knows? I might spark the kid’s curiosity. You never know.”
Bryan let out a small breath, shaking his head.
“Also,” the doctor continued, adjusting something on the monitor, “Damon should start investing in hospitals. Equipment. Pharmaceuticals. There’s real power there.”
He paused, then smirked faintly.
“Your wife is your karma, my boy,” he added, looking at Damon. “For all those heart that you broke-serves you right.”
Bryan laughed under his breath.
“Yeah… Lila really wiped you out,” he said.
The doctor chuckled.
“I remember this one model,” Bryan continued, leaning back slightly. “She almost stripped herself bare just to get his attention.”
He shook his head, amused.
“And what did Damon do? Chose an escort instead.”
The doctor laughed.
“She was furious,” Bryan added. “Started throwing everything in the room like a storm.”
“Not surprising,” the doctor replied. “And what about that politician’s daughter?”
Bryan grinned. “Oh, that one was worse.”
“She even slipped something into his drink,” the doctor said, picking up the story. “Alcohol, drugs-everything she could think of.”
Bryan nodded.
“And still… nothing,” he said.

The doctor glanced at Damon.
“Even under all that,” he continued, “no one could tempt him.”
A brief pause.
“Unless…” the doctor added with a knowing smile, “they looked like Lila. Spoke like her. Carried themselves like her.”
Bryan let out a soft laugh.
“I almost feel bad for them,” he admitted. “But they shouldn’t have played dirty.”
“Exactly,” the doctor said. “They never stood a chance.”
He folded his arms, still smiling faintly.
“His wife…” he added, shaking his head. “She’s something else.”
Bryan smirked.
“A real gangster.”
“And Maddy…” the doctor said, shaking his head with a half-smile. “For a moment, I really thought she had
won.”
Bryan raised an eyebrow. “Won? What is this, a competition now?”
The doctor chuckled. “With Damon? Always.”
He crossed his arms, clearly entertained by the memory.
“She had everything right-the dress, the attitude, even the confidence. Honestly, from a distance, I almost mistook her for Lila.”
Bryan let out a low whistle. “That good, huh?”
“Oh, she studied,” the doctor said. “Full preparation. Probably rehearsed in front of a mirror too.”
Bryan snorted.
“But then,” the doctor continued, his tone shifting, “Damon suddenly grabbed her by the neck.”
Bryan blinked. “Well… that escalated quickly.”
“And he said-” the doctor went on, trying not to smile,
‘You don’t smell like her. You don’t talk like her.’
Bryan covered his mouth, already holding back laughter.
‘Though you dress like her… I might give you an A+ for that.’
Bryan lost it. “An A+?! He graded her?!”
The doctor laughed. “Oh, he wasn’t done.”
‘Now get out.’
Bryan shook his head. “That’s brutal.”
“I know,” the doctor said. “Even his exes didn’t get reviewed like a school project.”
“When was this?” Bryan asked, still grinning..
“One of those fancy gala nights,” the doctor replied. “You know-the kind where everyone pretends to be classy while doing questionable things.”
“Ah, yes. High society,” Bryan nodded seriously… then smirked.
“When I got there,” the doctor continued, “he was already in the shower.”
Bryan raised a brow. “Let me guess-dramatic?”
“Standing under cold water like a rejected movie character,” the doctor said. “Just… sulking.”
Bryan laughed. “Damon? Sulking? I wish I saw that.”

“Oh, it gets better,” the doctor added. “He told me his wife was too cold.”
Bryan tilted his head. “Cold? Lila?”
“Yep. Said she didn’t even bother to look for him,” the doctor said. “Not even after all the messages those women were sending her.”
Bryan clicked his tongue. “That’s because she has standards.”
“I told him the same thing,” the doctor said. “I said, ‘You’re the problem. You keep pushing her away.”
A pause.
“He didn’t listen.”
Bryan sighed, shaking his head.
“And that,” he said, “is how a smart man becomes a stupid man.”
The doctor chuckled. “Exactly.”
“Lila signed the divorce,” Bryan added. “Serves him right.”
They both fell quiet for a moment-
then Bryan smirked again.
“Still,” he said, glancing at Damon, “grading people with an A+… that’s a new level of savage.”
The doctor laughed. “Your boss has standards.”
“Too high,” Bryan replied. “Only one woman passed.”
They both looked at Damon.
Still.
Silent.
But somehow-
the room didn’t feel as heavy anymore.
For a moment-
the room filled with laughter.
Light.
Unexpected.
The heavy atmosphere that had clung to the walls seemed to loosen, even just a little.
The machines still hummed.
Still beeped.
But now-
they didn’t sound as lonely.
And on the bed-
Damon remained still.
Yet somewhere beneath the silence,
beneath the memories and the voices-
something in him stirred.
