Chapter 212
Chapter 212
After settling Maddy carefully onto the small boat, the doctor stepped back onto the dock.
For a brief second, he just stood there.
Watching.
“Go,” he said quietly. “And stay safe.”
The boat pulled away, slow at first-then steady-cutting across the water as the distance between them grew.
Rose didn’t look back.
The doctor did.
Until they were nothing more than a shape against the morning light.
Only then did he reach into his pocket and pull out his phone.
The screen lit up instantly-
Missed calls.
Messages.
All from Bryan.
One after another.
His jaw tightened slightly.
He tapped once, bringing the phone to his ear.
The line connected.
“I’m safe,” he said briefly.
No explanation.
No details.
Then he ended the call and slipped the phone back into his pocket.
Just like that.
Gone.
As he walked back along the dock, he passed the same man still holding his fishing rod.
The doctor stopped.
Then, without a word, he sat down beside him again-like nothing had happened.
A slow grin spread across his face.
He reached into his pocket and tossed a few bills toward the man.
The man caught them easily, his grin just as wide.
“Business is good today?” the man asked.
The doctor chuckled.
“Sold her off to a businessman in Bel Air,” he said casually, leaning back. “I’ll follow later-after making sure she settles in. Old man’s got money to throw anyway.”
The man laughed, shaking his head.
“Lucky you.”
“Sometimes having a daughter pays off,” the doctor added with a shrug. “Easier to trade, easier to move.”
The man snorted in agreement, playing along with the rough humor of the docks.
“Boys just bring trouble,” he said. “Girls? As loan som

Chapter 212
“Mine had a rich boyfriend at the South City, she just need to be the best bed warmer and being pretty and
witty.”
They both laughed.
To anyone listening, it was just crude conversation between two men used to hard lives and harder choices.
Nothing unusual.
Nothing worth remembering.
But beneath the surface-
It was a performance.
A cover.
A deliberate lie, loud enough for the wrong ears to carry.
The doctor leaned forward slightly, picking up the fishing rod again.
Patient.
Still.
Waiting.
The sun climbed higher into the sky, burning away the last traces of dawn.
Time passed.
And eventually, both men stood, gathering their things like any other fishermen finishing their morning.
No rush.
No fear.
Just routine.
They walked away from the dock together-
Smiling.
Laughing.
As if nothing important had happened at all.
The doctor drove straight back to the mansion.
No hesitation.
No detours.
As soon as he stepped inside, he headed directly for the kitchen, a pail of fresh, large fish swinging lightly at his side.
Like nothing unusual had happened.
Like he hadn’t just sent two lives away into uncertainty.
He moved with precision.
Calm.
Methodical.
The fish were cleaned, sliced, and simmered into a rich, fragrant soup. Steam rose gently from the pot, filling the kitchen with warmth that contrasted sharply with everything else going on.
At the doorway-
Bryan stood watching.
Silent.

Arms crossed.
Observing.

The doctor didn’t look up at first.
But he knew.
When he finally turned and saw Bryan, he smiled as if greeting an old friend.
“Don’t you know Miss Lila is worried about you?” Bryan said, his tone flat but edged.
The doctor chuckled softly, stirring the pot.
“That’s why I’m preparing a peace offering,” he said.
Bryan didn’t move.
“Do you really think Miss Lila would give a damn about that?”
The doctor smirked.
“That,” he said casually, “is exactly why you don’t have a wife yet.”
Bryan’s expression darkened instantly.
“What did you say?” he asked, stepping closer.
The doctor didn’t even flinch.
“I said,” he repeated, turning to face him fully, “you don’t know how to coax a woman.”
A beat.
“Are you deaf? Do you want me to check your ears?”
That was enough.
Bryan lunged.
In a split second, he grabbed the doctor and bit down hard on his shoulder.
“Hey-! You damn brat!” the doctor hissed, struggling to push him off.
They stumbled slightly, knocking into the counter.
The pot rattled.
Steam rose.
Chaos-loud, ridiculous, completely out of place.
And then-
Lila stepped into the kitchen.
She paused.
Took in the scene.
Bryan clinging to the doctor like a rabid dog.
The doctor trying to pry him off.
Utter nonsense.
Her gaze shifted,
To the counter.
To the pot.
To the smell.
Rich.
Warm.
Tempting.

Chapter 212
Without a word, she walked forward.
Picked up a spoon.
Scooped some of the fish soup-along with a piece of tender meat.
And tasted it.
Right there.
While watching the two men struggle like children.
She chewed slowly.
Calm.
Unbothered.
Evaluating.
Behind her, Bryan finally let go, breathing hard.
The doctor rubbed his shoulder, glaring at him.
“You’re insane,” he muttered.
Lila swallowed.
Then spoke.
“… It needs salt.”
Both men froze.
Turned to her.
She took another spoonful.
Still watching them.
“And next time,” she added casually, “if you’re going to fight…”
Her eyes flicked between them.
“…don’t do it near my food.”
A beat.
Silence.
Then-
She took another bite.
As if nothing else mattered.
After finishing her meal, Lila stood and walked back to the study.
The doctor and Bryan followed behind her-
Still hissing at each other under their breath like children who refused to lose an argument.
Lila ignored them.
For now.
She sat down in her chair and pressed her fingers lightly against her temple, massaging it slowly.”
“The soup was good,” she said after a moment, glancing at the doctor with a faint smile.
The doctor brightened slightly.
“Of course. The fish was fresh-caught this morning,” he said, rubbing his shoulder where Bryan had bitten him. “If you want, I can go back tomorrow and-”
“You were paid to take care of the master,” Bryan cut in sharply, “not go fishing.”

The doctor scoffed.
“And you were paid to assist-not to stick your nose into everything and bite the doctor who’s actually keeping your master alive.”
Bryan’s eyes narrowed.
“Oh, I’ll bite you again-”
And just like that-
They started again.
Voices rising.
Tension flaring.
Completely forgetting where they were.
Minutes passed.
Until-
Lila sighed.
“Enough.”
Her voice wasn’t loud.
But it cut through everything.
Instantly.
Both men froze.
Silence fell.
Heavy.
Controlled.
Lila didn’t speak right away.
She let it settle.
Let them feel it.
Then-
The doctor stepped forward.
His tone changed.
Serious now.
“The reason I didn’t return for days,” he began, “is because two women trespassed into my cabin.”
Lila’s eyes lifted slowly.
“One is Rose,” he continued. “The other… is Maddy.”
That name alone shifted the air.
“They escaped from Daven,” the doctor said. “Maddy was in critical condition. Weak… and she suffered a miscarriage.”
A brief silence.
“I performed emergency surgery,” he added. “But… the baby didn’t make it.”
Bryan’s jaw tightened.
But he said nothing.
“I helped them escape,” the doctor continued, placing a file and a photo on the desk. “I accompanied them out safely.”

Lila’s gaze dropped to the photo.
Her fingers stilled.
Maddy.
Pale.
Thin.
Unrecognizable from the woman she used to be.
Gone was the elegance.
The allure.
What remained was someone fragile-
Worn down.
Broken by something far deeper than just captivity.
Lila’s expression didn’t change much.
But her eyes did.
They hardened.
Just slightly.
As she continued to stare at the image.
“Daven…” she murmured under her breath.
Not a question.
Not even anger.
Something colder.
More precise.
Her fingers tapped lightly against the table once.
Then stopped.
“She wasn’t supposed to survive,” Lila said quietly.
The doctor didn’t answer.
Because they all knew-
She was right.
Lila leaned back slowly, her gaze still fixed on the photo.
“Then this just became personal.”
A pause.
Her eyes lifted to the doctor.
“Where are they now?”
The room held its breath.
