Chapter 255
Chapter 255
Midnight came again.
The house fell into silence, the kind that pressed against the walls and lingered in the corners like something alive. The wind outside had softened, but the sea remained restless, its waves breaking against the shore in steady, endless rhythm.
Damon stood once more in front of the medicine cabinet.
The dim light above flickered faintly, casting shifting shadows across the neatly arranged bottles. Everything was in place-too perfect, too deliberate. Each vial aligned, each label facing forward, untouched.
Unchanged.
Just as Rose had left it.
Just as he had expected.
His gaze lingered, cold and calculating. No confusion now. No hesitation. Only quiet observation.
Something wasn’t right.
And whatever truth hid behind these small, harmless-looking medicines… it was getting closer to the surface.
After a long moment, Damon stepped back.
Then turned.
And walked out of the house.
The night air greeted him with a cool, salty breeze. The sand beneath his bare feet shifted softly as he moved toward the shore. The moon hung low, casting pale silver light across the water.
And he wasn’t alone.
A man sat a few meters away, perched casually on an overturned crate, a cigarette glowing faintly between his fingers. Smoke curled upward, dissolving into the night air.
The man glanced at Damon and smirked.
“Want one?” he asked, holding out the pack.
Damon stopped, then shook his head slightly.
“My wife doesn’t like the scent of cigarettes,” he said flatly.
The man raised an eyebrow, amused.
“Your wife must be something,” he replied, tilting his head. “For you to let her put a leash on your neck like that.”
Damon didn’t respond.
Instead, he walked forward and sat down on the sand beside the man. Close enough to share the silence, but distant enough to remain separate.
The man took another drag, studying him from the corner of his eye.
“They already moved out,” he said casually.
Damon didn’t ask who.
Didn’t react..
His gaze remained fixed on the dark horizon, where the sea swallowed the sky.
Then-
Movement.

A shadow surged forward from behind them.
Fast.
Sudden.
A bat swung through the air, aimed directly at the man’s head-
But he reacted just as quickly.
His hand shot up, catching the bat mid-swing.
“What the hell?!” the man barked.
A struggle followed.
Rose.
Her face twisted with urgency, her grip tightening as she tried to wrench the weapon free-but the man was stronger. Within seconds, he overpowered her, forcing her down into the sand, pinning her wrists. Damon didn’t move.
He remained seated.
Watching.
“Mr. Damon!” Rose called out, her voice strained. “You should go inside-it’s not safe here! You cannot trust anyone!”
Slowly…
Damon turned his head.
His gaze landed on her.
Cold.
Unfamiliar.
“Why is that?” he asked quietly. “Do you know this man?”
Rose froze.
For the first time-she hesitated.
“I… no, I mean-” she started, her voice faltering.
Damon’s eyes didn’t leave hers.
“Why would they harm me?” he continued, his tone steady, almost curious. “Did I do something bad?”
The man holding her suddenly laughed.
A low, amused sound.
He released her just as abruptly as he had restrained her, stepping back with his hands raised in mock surrender.
“Easy there, lady,” he said, smirking. “I’m just a fisherman. Saw him wandering around-am I not allowed to talk to him?”
Rose didn’t respond.
Her eyes were locked onto the man now-studying him, measuring him, searching for something beneath the surface.
Damon noticed.
Of course he did.
Nothing escaped him anymore.
“Rose,” he said calmly, drawing her attention back. “Tell me the truth.”
A pause.

Chapter 255
Heavy..
Unavoidable.
“Am I a criminal?”
The question landed between them like a blade.
Rose’s breath caught.
“No, Mr. Damon,” she said quickly. “You are not.”
Her voice steadied, slipping back into its usual softness.
“You are Miss Maddy’s beloved husband.”
The words sounded rehearsed.
Practiced.
Damon repeated them quietly, almost tasting them.
“Beloved…”
Rose stepped closer, picking up a jacket and draping it over his shoulders.
“It’s not good to stay out here,” she added gently. “You’ll catch a cold.”
But Damon didn’t move.
His gaze remained distant.
“Beloved husband,” he echoed again.
“Yes,” Rose insisted. “You are Miss Maddy’s beloved husband.”
A silence followed.
Then-
“But the woman in my dreams…” Damon said slowly, “…keeps calling me ‘dearest husband.”
Rose’s heart skipped.
Dreams?
“When I sleep,” Damon continued, his voice quieter now, “I see her. She’s holding a child.”
His eyes narrowed slightly, as if trying to grasp something just out of reach.
“She keeps calling me that… over and over.”
Rose didn’t know what to say.
Her mind raced.
Dreams were dangerous.
Memories didn’t always return directly-sometimes they crept in through fragments like this.
Uncontrolled.
Unpredictable.
“Oh… is that so?” she said carefully, forcing a small smile.
Damon exhaled softly.
For a brief moment-
He smiled.
Faint.
Ghostlike.
Gone almost instantly.
Rose blinked.

“The woman in my dreams…” he continued, tightening his hold slightly, “…she keeps haunting me.”
His breathing slowed, but his grip didn’t loosen.
“Only you,” he added quietly, “I feel comfortable with you.”
A pause.
Then-
“As for Maddy…”
Rose’s body tensed.
“I feel like she’s trying to kill me.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
“Miss Maddy would never harm you, Mr. Damon,” Rose said quickly, forcing calm into her voice.
But Damon continued as if he hadn’t heard her.
“She kept insisting I drink the juice this morning,” he said. “After I drank it… I didn’t feel good.”
Rose’s heart pounded.
“I collapsed outside,” Damon went on. “And when I woke up… I was already on the sofa.”
His grip tightened slightly.
“I don’t remember anything.”
—
Rose’s face hardened.
So Maddy had acted.
And worse-
She had been careless.
Careless enough to leave traces.
Careless enough for Damon to notice.
But Rose couldn’t show that.
Not now.
Not ever.
“You’re just still recovering,” she said gently. “Your body is weak. That’s all.”
But her mind was already racing again.
Adjusting.
Recalculating.
They needed to be more careful.
Much more careful.
Minutes passed.
Then an hour.
Rose remained seated beside the bed, trapped by Damon’s unyielding grip.
Eventually, exhaustion crept in.
Her eyelids grew heavy.

Her body slackened.
And slowly-
She fell asleep.
The room fell silent once more.
The only sound was the distant ocean.
And Damon’s breathing.
Steady.
Controlled.
Not asleep.
His eyes opened.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
And they landed on Rose.
Watching her.
Studying her.
Cold.
Awake.
Aware.
Every word he had spoken earlier replayed in his mind.
Every reaction.
Every hesitation.
Every lie.
His grip on her wrist remained firm.
But now-
It wasn’t out of fear.
It was control.
And for the first time since he arrived on the island-
Damon was no longer the one being watched.
He was the one watching.
Waiting.
And slowly…
Putting everything together.
