The Wife He Never Meant to Love (Lila and Damon) novel Chapter 271

And now-

The hospital where the Blackthorne matriarch lay recovering had quietly begun to change.

From the outside, nothing seemed unusual.

Doctors moved in and out of rooms. Nurses carried charts and medication trays. Visitors came and went under the soft glow of fluorescent lights.

But beneath that ordinary surface-

Something else was unfolding.

Inside one of the upper floors, a man stood by the window.

A doctor.

Or at least, that was what his uniform said.

He remained in the shadows, carefully positioned so the dim lighting concealed his face from anyone below. His gaze was fixed on the parking lot, watching the subtle shifts in movement, the unfamiliar figures blending too seamlessly into the hospital environment.

They were here.

Just as expected.

He lifted his phone and dialed a number.

The line connected almost immediately.

“Brat,” he said quietly, his tone clipped. “They’re already moving.”

On the other end, Bryan exhaled.

There was no surprise in his response.

“Yeah,” he said. “As expected.”

His voice was steady, but tension lingered beneath it.

“The Madam refused to return to the estate. She knew this day would come.”

A pause.

“And Lila…”

Another breath.

“She already landed in South City.”

The room was quiet.

Too quiet for a place that now held three restless hearts.

Lila stood near the entrance for a moment after closing the door, her hand still re

on the handle as if grounding herself.

The journey had been longer than expected.

Not because of distance.

But because of everything that came with it.

Behind her-

Two small hands were tightly clasped together.

Damian and Ethan stood side by side.

Neither spoke.

Neither moved.

They simply held onto each other, as though letting go w

And saw them.

Two small figures.

Watching her.

Those unmistakable eyes.

Wide.

Guilty.

Hopeful.

Jorgie had reacted faster than she did.

The man she had chosen to accompany her had already stepped forward, catching

both children before they could stumble down the steps in their rush.

Lila had just stood there.

Staring.

At their faces.

Those faces.

The kind that only appeared when they knew they had been caught.

When they knew they had done something wrong.

And yet-

Still hoped to be forgiven.

“You kids are impossible,” she had said.

Now-

Standing in the hotel room-

That same feeling returned.

They looked exhausted.

Dark circles under their eyes.

Bodies swaying slightly as they fought the pull of sleep.

“Go take a shower,” Lila said softly. “Then sleep.”

They didn’t argue.

Didn’t protest.

They walked toward the bathroom together.

Still holding hands.

But then-

Damian stopped.

Ethan continued inside.

But Damian remained at the door.

Watching her.

“Damian,” Lila said gently.

“Ethan first,” he replied. “Me after.”

Lila blinked.

Then frowned slightly.

“Are you guarding me?”

“Yes.”

The answer came without hesitation.

“Guarding you,” Damian added, his voice steady, “and making sure you won’t leave as behind.”

The words struck deeper than he probably intended.

Lila crouched down slowly, bringing herself to his eye level.

“Hey,” she said softly. “Who said I would leave you two behind?”

Damian didn’t look away.

“But you just did,” he said. “If we didn’t realize it.”

Silence fell between them.

Lila stared at him.

At the quiet accusation in his eyes.

And for the first time-

She felt it.

Not doubt.

Not fear.

Guilt.

Lila exhaled.

“They’re with me,” she said.

A pause.

Then-

“They literally escaped from you.”

Her tone sharpened slightly.

“I can say you’re not ready to be a father. You’re just going to lose them.”

On the other end-

Bryan let out a long, shaky breath.

Relief flooding through him.

“But your kids aren’t ordinary,” he muttered. “They tricked me.”

Lila almost smiled.

Almost.

“Watch Margaret for me,” she said.

Then ended the call.

Silence returned.

She looked at Damian again.

Lila nodded again.

Only then did he close the door.

The sound echoed softly in the room.

Lila exhaled slowly.

Then-

She sank onto the bed.

Her body felt heavy.

Her mind heavier.

She closed her eyes.

And saw it again.

The image Evelyn had sent her.

Damon.

Sitting beside Maddy.

Feeding her.

Carefully.

Gently.

Just like before.

Always there.

Whenever Maddy needed him.

Wherever he was-

He would come.

And the way he looked at her-

Tender.

Loving.

Unwavering.

Lila had known.

She had always known.

But her heart-

Had refused to accept it.

Refused to let him go.

And now

Here they were again.

The same.

Just like yesterday.

Except

It wasn’t the same.

Because now-

There were children.

Their children.

Damon wouldn’t let them go.

She knew that.

And that terrified her.

Because Damian-

Would never accept running.

If she took them and disappeared-

Damon would hunt them.

Relentlessly.

And Lila-

Didn’t want that life.

She didn’t want her children growing up like fugitives.

Hiding.

Running.

Looking over their shoulders.

That wasn’t the future she wanted.

For Damian.

For Ethan.

Or even for herself.

Her fingers tightened against the bedsheet.

She had come here for answers.

But now

All she had were more questions.

And a choice she wasn’t ready to make.

Outside-

The rain continued to fall.

And across the city-

Plans moved quietly into place.

Because while Lila struggled with her heart-

Others had already chosen their path.

And they would not stop.
