The Wife He Never Meant to Love (Lila and Damon) novel Chapter 272

Chpater 272

When morning came, Lila took Ethan and Damian downstairs for breakfast at the hotel restaurant. The luxurious dining hall was already filled with wealthy guests, businessmen, and tourists enjoying the soft morning atmosphere. The sound of cutlery clinking against porcelain plates blended with the quiet melody of piano music drifting through the room.

Ethan and Damian ate peacefully at the table looking no different from ordinary children at first glance.

But they never once let their guard down.

Their eyes constantly moved around the restaurant, carefully scanning every corner while still eating calmly. Ethan casually observed the reflection in the glass windows behind them while Damian paid attention to every person entering and leaving the

restaurant.

Jorgie sat beside them silently, watching both the surroundings and the children with amusement hidden in his eyes.

These kids are something else.

He had seen trained adults less observant than the two children sitting in front of him.

Ethan reached for his juice while quietly whispering, “The man near the entrance has been looking here too often.”

Damian did not even raise his head. “His watch has an earpiece attachment.”

Jorgie nearly laughed.

Instead of panicking, the children continued eating their breakfast as if discussing the

weather.

I hope my future kids will be like this.

The thought made Jorgie smile slightly.

Damian immediately looked suspicious. “Why are you smiling?”

“Nothing,” Jorgie replied smoothly.

“You smiled weirdly,” Ethan added.

Jorgie shook his head helplessly.

Sharp instincts. Dangerous instincts.

Lila sat across from them, calmly reading files from her tablet while drinking coffee.

Even while occupied, she noticed everything around her.

“Finish your food,” she said without looking up.

The boys obediently continued eating.

After breakfast, they left the hotel and drove through the busy city streets toward Foster Technology, the massive company now fully under Blackthorne Industries after the acquisition months ago.

The towering glass building stood proudly in the financial district like a symbol of power itself.

The moment Lila stepped out of the car, the atmosphere around the building immediately changed.

Employees straightened nervously.

Executives waiting near the entrance lowered their heads respectfully.

“Good morning, Ms. Blackthorne.”

Lila acknowledged them with a small nod before entering the private elevator with Ethan, Damian, and Jorgie.

The executive floor fell completely silent the moment she arrived.

Inside the luxurious executive office overlooking the city skyline, Lila finally turned toward the boys.

“Behave,” she warned, giving them a sharp look.

The twins nodded immediately.

“We will,” Ethan answered.

Damian added quietly, “Probably.”

Lila raised one eyebrow.

Damian instantly corrected himself.

“Definitely.”

Jorgie chuckled under his breath.

Lila finally turned and left for the board meeting.

The moment the doors closed behind her, Ethan sighed dramatically bef

onto the couch.

“She becomes scarier during meetings,” he muttered.

“She only slept two hours,” Damian replied calmly.

Jorgie leaned against the wall near the door, arms crossed while observing the

“We learned from adults,” Ethan replied.

“That sounds unhealthy.”

“It is,” Damian answered honestly.

Inside the boardroom, the meeting dragged endlessly

One proposal after another was presented before Lila, Investment opportunities flooded the table like heavy rain as executives and investors desperately tried to gain Blackthorne Industries’ approval,

Large digital screens continuously shifted between financial charts, expansion projects, and market forecasts.

Yet despite the exhausting pace, Lila remained completely composed

Cold.

Focused.

Terrifyingly attentive.

Every document presented to her was carefully reviewed page by page.

Every flaw was noticed immediately.

One executive confidently explained projected revenue growth until Lila suddenly interrupted him.

“The projected increase on page thirty-six is impossible.”

The entire room froze.

The executive stammered nervously. “W-We based it on-”

“You inflated the market growth percentage by twelve percent.”

Silence spread across the boardroom.

Sweat formed on the executive’s forehead instantly.

Lila closed the folder calmly.

“Next.”

Nobody dared relax after that.

By lunchtime, exhaustion had already spread throughout the room, forcing the meeting to pause temporarily.

Lila returned to the executive office where Ethan and Damian immediately b upon seeing her.

“Food?” Ethan asked hopefully.

Lila almost smiled.

“Yes.”

The boys instantly stood.

Jorgie followed behind them as they exited Foster Technology through the private parking area to avoid reporters waiting outside the building.

Instead of choosing somewhere expensive, Lila took them to a quiet restaurant

several streets away.

For the first time that day, the tension surrounding her softened slightly.

The boys immediately began talking nonstop during lunch.

Ethan passionately explained conspiracy theories about sharks secretly ruling the

ocean.

Damian looked embarrassed. “Please ignore him.”

“They’re apex predators,” Ethan defended proudly. “They cannot even breathe outside water.”

“That’s because humans are limiting their potential.”

Jorgie nearly choked on his drink trying not to laugh.

Lila quietly listened to their endless conversation while eating. Occasionally, she responded with short comments, but mostly she simply watched them with softened

eyes.

Only around the children did she look truly human.

After lunch, they returned to Foster Technology where the endless meetings resumed immediately.

Hours turned into evening.

Evening turned into deep night.

One by one, exhausted executives lost focus while Lila remained frighteningly sharp.

By midnight, only the executive floor remained illuminated.

Inside the office, Ethan and Damian were already asleep on the large couch beneath blankets provided by the staff.

They had stubbornly refused to return to the hotel without Lila.

Jorgie stood near the window, watching the sleeping twins quietly.

“They trust her too much,” he murmured.

But honestly, he understood why.

Lila finally exited the boardroom shortly after midnight.

Though her expression remained calm, exhaustion lingered faintly beneath her e

“The car is ready,” Jorgie informed her.

Lila nodded silently.

Together, they carefully carried the sleeping boys downstairs.

Damian unconsciously tightened his grip around Lila’s shoulder while sleeping while Ethan frowned slightly but never woke up.

Jorgie carefully placed Ethan inside the car before quietly closing the door.

The city lights blurred outside the windows as they drove through the silent midnight

streets.

Lila sat in the passenger seat quietly watching the glowing skyline pass by.

Then suddenly-

Her phone chimed.

She looked down at the screen.

An address.

A hospital address.

For several long seconds, Lila remained silent.

Her expression unreadable.

When they arrived at the hotel, several staff members carefully helped carry Ethan and Damian back into their room.

Only after ensuring the children were asleep safely did Lila step back outside.

Without speaking, she forwarded the hospital address to Jorgie.

He immediately understood.

The car engine started once more.

The journey toward the hospital remained silent.

Jorgie repeatedly checked the magazine of his handgun while driving.

Check.

Lila finally looked at him.

“In case we need it,” Jorgie said simply.

Lila said nothing.

filled him with dangerous satisfaction.

Still, he buried the feeling beneath his cold expression.

Not now, he reminded himself.

From the corner of his eye, Henry kept scanning the shadows nearby.

The man who excelled at blending into darkness should have been there already.

Watching.

Following.

Waiting.

But tonight…

nothing.

And that bothered Henry deeply.

Being watched thrilled him.

Outsmarting enemies satisfied him even more.

But uncertainty irritated him.

Where could he be?

Finally, Henry pushed open the door.

Inside the room, Damon remained seated beside Maddy’s bed, but his eyes never once

left Lila.

Lila slowly sat down on the opposite side of the bed.

Now they faced each other directly.

Between them lay Maddy, deeply asleep beneath the pale hospital lig

Lila’s nails dug painfully into her palms beneath the blanket.

“I see you’re still the same,” she said quietly while staring at Maddy’s pal caring for her more than me.”

Damon’s chest tightened painfully.

“How is she?” Lila asked softly.

“She suffered so much because of you.”

Damon lowered his gaze silently.

“Maybe this time…” Lila continued, her voice trembling

Every word shattered her heart further.

But she already knew the truth.

No matter what happened…

No matter how many times fate separated them…

Damon and Maddy always found their way back to each other.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Perhaps she should have obeyed Damon from the very beginning.

Given him an heir…

then quietly disappeared afterward.

If she had done that…

Would everyone have suffered less?

Would her children still have their father?

Would her heart still ache like this?

Before anyone could speak-

Maddy suddenly stirred awake.

Her eyes slowly opened.

The first person she saw was Damon.

Relief immediately filled her face.

But when she followed Damon’s line of sight

she froze.

Her eyes landed on Lila sitting beside her bed.

Instant anger exploded inside her.

Without hesitation, Maddy swung her hand toward Lila intending to sl

Maddy turned in shock.

“Damon?”

Tears instantly filled her eyes.

“Why?” she cried painfully. “Why are you protecting her?”

Damon frowned slightly.

“Is she someone I know?”

as your mistress!”

Chpater 272

The room instantly fell silent.

But what hurt Maddy most was not his question.

It was the longing in his eyes whenever he looked at Lila.

That alone fueled her hatred further.

Lila slowly stood from her chair.

“Maddy, stop being dramatic,” she said calmly. “You can keep my dear husband.”

Maddy froze.

“You can have him for the rest of your life,” Lila continued quietly. “Just leave me and my children alone.”

Her voice trembled despite her efforts.

“I wish both of you happiness.”

Then she turned to leave.

But before she could take another step-

Damon suddenly grabbed her wrist.

Lila froze.

That warmth.

The same warmth that once melted her heart completely.

The same touch she longed for during lonely nights.

The same touch haunting her memories.

Love truly was cruel.

“Are you…” Damon whispered hoarsely, “…my wife?”

Lila slowly looked back at him.

Confusion filled her eyes.

What game was he playing now?

First he disappeared like a dead man.

Now he acted like someone suffering from amnesia.

Before Lila could answer-

“No!” Maddy shouted desperately while struggling to sit upright.

Henry immediately supported her.

“She’s lying!” Maddy cried toward Damon. “Don’t listen to her! She’s your mistress!”

Damon ignored her completely.

His eyes remained locked onto Lila.

Chpater 272

“I left you before,” Maddy continued frantically. “But you kept searching for me! That’s why you washed ashore near where I found you!”

Tears streamed endlessly down her face.

“Maybe we’re destined for each other! The sea brought you back to me again!”

But Damon barely heard any of it.

Because right now-

the only thing he wanted was Lila.

To pull her into his arms.

To cage her against his chest.

To keep her so close that nobody could take her away again.

Even he did not understand why.

His grip tightened slightly around her wrist.

“Tell me,” Damon demanded painfully. “Are you my lovely wife… the woman haunting my dreams every night?”

Lila stared at him silently.

Then slowly-

she smirked.

A bitter exhausted smirk.

She was tired.

So tired of this endless game between them.
