Back at Blackthorne Industries, the atmosphere inside Damon’s executive office was colder than usual.
Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the skyline, but Damon wasn’t looking at the view. He sat behind his desk, fingers steepled, eyes sharp.
Bryan stood across from him, posture straight.
“Sir, Integer Technology declined our offer.”
Damon’s gaze lifted slowly. “What?”
“I don’t know the reason, sir,” Bryan replied carefully. “No counteroffer. No negotiation. Just a direct refusal.”
Silence stretched thin.
Damon had wanted the proprietary software Integer Technology developed – advanced architecture, scalable infrastructure, efficient coding structure. It was precisely the kind of system he could integrate across three of his subsidiaries.
And yet…
They declined.
“Request a meeting,” Damon ordered.
“I did, sir,” Bryan answered. “It was immediately turned down.”
That made Damon lean back slightly.
Integer Technology was small. Newly built. Barely on the radar.
And yet they rejected Blackthorne Industries.
Rejected him.
Interesting.
“We’re going to meet them personally,” Damon said calmly, though his eyes darkened. “We’re flying out tonight. Inform them to prepare the private plane.”
Bryan nodded respectfully. “Yes, sir.”
He turned to leave.
“Bryan.”
He stopped.

Chapter 52
:
“Have someone sit in on tonight’s investor meeting with Jasper. Quietly. I want a full report.”
A pause.
“And watch closely,” Damon added, voice lower, deliberate. “To my wife.”
The words left his mouth naturally.
Possessively.
As if there had never been any other title for her.
Outside the half-open office door, Maddy stood frozen.
She hadn’t meant to overhear.
But she had.
My wife.
The phrase echoed in her mind — not soft, not romantic.
Claiming.
Her expression darkened.
So he was watching Lila.
Monitoring her movements.
Even now.

Maddy turned sharply and walked back toward her own office, heels clicking with controlled precision.
Once inside, she closed the door.
Locked it.
Then picked up her phone.
“Mike,” she said as soon as he answered. “Are you in the city?”
“Yes,” Mike replied immediately. “Why?”
“Are you free tonight?”
A slight pause. Then, lighter – curious. “For you? Always.”
“Good,” Maddy said smoothly. “There’s an investor meeting. I’d like to attend.”
“With Jasper?” he asked.
Chapter 52
“Yes.”
G
“Then I’ll see you there.”
She didn’t hesitate.
“Send me the location.”
When the call ended, Maddy stood still for a moment.
If Damon wanted surveillance…
If he wanted territory…
Then she would expand hers.
Inside his office, Damon reviewed the Integer Technology file again.
A small, newly established company.
Minimal public exposure.
Yet confident enough to reject him.
His jaw tightened.
He wasn’t aware who was behind the software development.
He didn’t know who had the nerve to refuse Blackthorne Industries.
But he would.
By tonight.
Across town, Lila woke abruptly, her neck stiff from sleeping upright.
Morning light filled the room.
Her phone buzzed softly beside her.
A message from Jasper.
Dinner meeting confirmed. 7 PM. Investors are expecting us.
She exhaled slowly.
Tonight would change something.
She could feel it.
He emphasized the word CEO.
A ripple passed through the room.
Even those pretending to focus on their screens were listening now.
Damon said nothing.
He was observing.
Almost every employee looked fresh out of university – sharp eyes, eager posture, unfinished confidence. Young talent.
So the mind behind this operation was young too.
He could sense it.
The structure of the workspace, the energy in the air – it wasn’t inherited power. It was built from scratch.
Yet Damon had reviewed their financial report on the flight.
Impressive revenue control. Efficient capital allocation. Strategic foresight well beyond a beginner’s level.
And the business proposal they sent in response to his acquisition attempt?
Direct. Analytical. Unapologetic.
They didn’t flatter him.
They didn’t negotiate.
They declined him.

Chapter 52
So young… yet so bold.
A faint smile touched Damon’s lips.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
The receptionist made a quiet call.
“Yes… they’re here.”
A pause.
Her eyes flickered toward Damon before she nodded.
“The owner will see you now.”
Damon adjusted his cufflinks slightly.
His gaze lifted toward the glass office at the far end of the studio.
Behind the partially drawn blinds, a shadow moved.
Calm.
Unhurried.
Not intimidated.
Damon’s smile deepened – not amused, but intrigued.
Whoever built Integer Technology…
Had courage.”
And tonight-
He would find out whether that courage was brilliance…
Or arrogance.
