The Wife He Never Meant to Love (Lila and Damon) novel Chapter 53

Chapter 53

Chapter 53

:

The investor meeting was moving smoothly when Lila’s phone vibrated again.

She glanced down.

Mark.

Her expression remained composed. “Excuse me,” she said softly to Jasper and the investors before stepping out into the quiet corridor.

The moment the door closed behind her, she answered.

“What happened?”

“Damon is here,” Mark said without preamble. “At the studio.”

Lila went still.

“He’s talking partnership. Directly.”

Of course he is.

“What are the terms?” she asked calmly.

“The offer is generous,” Mark admitted. “Capital expansion, global distribution, infrastructure backing. We retain branding, but strategic decisions would align with Blackthorne.”

Meaning: control, slowly absorbed.

“And?” she prompted.

Mark hesitated.

“He made it clear that if we refuse again, Blackthorne will move to Foster Technology instead.”

Lila’s eyes sharpened.

Foster Technology.

The very company Integer had been considering partnering with – specifically to accommodate their expanding cloud storage needs. Foster had the server capacity they lacked. The scalability. The regional dominance in data infrastructure.

If Blackthorne acquired Foster first-

Integer wouldn’t just lose a partner.

They would lose leverage.

“And he implied,” Mark continued quietly, “that once Blackthorne aligns with Foster…. there won’t be space in

the market for us.”

There it was.

Not a direct threat.

But a strategic suffocation.

Damon wasn’t asking.

He was cornering.

A business deal with the faintest edge of coercion.

Lila leaned against the cool wall, thinking quickly.

If Integer accepted Blackthorne’s offer, they gained immediate scale — but lost independence.

If they refused and Damon backed Foster, Foster would prioritize Blackthorne’s needs. Cloud access would tighten. Server allocation would shift. Integer’s growth would stall.

And worse-

They had planned to approach Foster themselves.

Damon was cutting off their oxygen.

“Did he seem aware?” Lila asked quietly.

“Aware of what?”

“Of who structured our expansion model.”

Mark paused. “No. He looked intrigued. Confident. But not suspicious.”

Good.

Very good.

“Don’t accept,” Lila said decisively.

Mark inhaled sharply. “Lila-”

“Not yet,” she corrected. “Tell him we are reviewing internally. Request forty-eight hours.”

“He won’t like delay.”

“He doesn’t have to.”

Silence.

“We move first,” she continued. “Accelerate the proposal to Foster. Secure preliminary cloud allocation before Blackthorne signs anything.”

“That’s risky.”

“So is surrender.”

Mark exhaled slowly. “You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

Her voice was calm.

Unwavering.

“If Damon wants to pressure us through Foster,” she said quietly, “then we make Foster dependent on us before he gets there.”

A counter-leverage play.

If Integer locked in a cloud agreement with Foster first – even partially – it would complicate Blackthorne’s entry. Contracts. Capacity limitations. Priority clauses.

Damon thrived on dominance.

But dominance required timing.

And timing could be disrupted.

“Buy me time,” she said. “I’ll adjust the proposal tonight.”

She ended the call.

For a moment, she simply stood there, staring at the city lights beyond the glass.

Damon had made his move.

Calculated.

Elegant.

Threatening without raising his voice.

But he had underestimated one thing-

Integer Technology was not naive.

And it was not alone.

Lila straightened her posture and reentered the investor lounge.

Jasper’s eyes lifted immediately.

“Everything alright?” he asked quietly.

Lila gave him a small, controlled smile.

“Yes,” she said.

But inside, the game had changed.

:

This was no longer about distancing herself from Damon.

This was about meeting him

And this time-

She intended to win.

strategically.

When Lila returned to the private room, she spotted him immediately.

Mike Foster stood on the balcony, phone pressed to his ear, the city lights reflecting off the glass behind him. His posture was casual, but the intensity in his gaze betrayed a man who measured everything.

Lila didn’t move at first. She waited, letting him finish his call.

When he finally ended it and turned, their eyes met. Without hesitation, Lila approached him, her steps confident, purposeful.

“I need to speak with you about the deal,” she said, her tone firm yet calm.

Mike folded the phone in his hand, listening.

“I can secure alternative servers,” she continued, “but Foster Technology’s infrastructure… it’s unmatched. The level of security your systems provide is exactly what Integer Technology needs for our software.”

Mike’s eyes flickered with interest. He nodded slowly, letting her make her point.

“And yet,” he said finally, “the servers you want have already been allocated to Blackthorne Industries.”

Lila’s expression didn’t waver. She held his gaze steadily.

“If I truly want it,” Mike added, his tone low, deliberate, “I will have to ask Damon personally. Maybe he’ll agree.”

A faint tension ran between them – professional, strategic, and just a touch personal. Mike’s thoughts betrayed him for a moment. The softness she displayed, the composure, the quiet confidence… it stirred something he had long tried to ignore. He had wanted her in his bed, imagined the warmth and control, the way she would yield under his presence.

But the memory of his foolish son, Daven, loomed over him. One reckless move had almost brought his empire to its knees. One misstep, and his world could collapse.

Mike inhaled slowly, forcing his desire back under control. He was a man who played the long game. He could not risk it not for ambition, not for lust.

“Consider your next steps carefully,” he said evenly, masking the tension in his chest. “If you want the servers, it’s through Damon. He holds the key.”

Lila nodded once, her composure perfect. “Thank you for your honesty.”

Mike’s gaze lingered on her for a beat longer than necessary, a hint of admiration — and restraint — – in his eyes. Then he stepped aside.

Lila turned, moving back into the private room. Her face remained calm, but inside, the pressure of the deal, and the knowledge that the only path forward ran through Damon, pressed down on her like a weight.

She had to be clever. She had to be careful.

And more than anything, she had to be ready.

As Lila walked past the private room, she noticed Mike Foster step inside.

She paused for a moment, her curiosity piqued, and caught a glimpse of Maddy within. The scene froze her for a heartbeat. Even from her angle, she could hear Maddy’s voice – low, sultry, unmistakably lustful.

So that’s how they secured Foster Technology.

A smirk curved Lila’s lips, sharp and amused. Filthy dogs… really a match made in heaven, she thought, her mind tracing the unspoken dynamics in the room.

Her eyes shifted, and she noticed a man standing near the door to the private room. Damon’s secretary — she remembered him from the office. Attentive, discreet, professional. A shadow in the background, quietly ensuring control.

Lila straightened her posture, smoothed her expression, and returned to the private room. Sliding into her seat next to Jasper, she settled in, letting the world outside fade for a moment.

“Are you okay?” Jasper asked quietly, concern clear in his eyes.

“Yeah,” she answered smoothly, meeting his gaze. “I’m fine.”

She caught herself surprised by his attentiveness. Not a glance wasted, not a gesture missed. Even as the room around them hummed with conversation and quiet negotiation, Jasper’s focus remained on her.

He placed a small dish of food in front of her, carefully arranged.

“No alcohol,” he said, his tone casual but firm. “The meeting is purely for proposals and connections. We can toast after the deal and agreement is finalized.”

Lila raised an eyebrow, impressed. Thoughtful. Respectful. Protective without being overbearing.

She nodded slightly, allowing herself a quiet smile.

The room felt charged — not just with business, but with the unspoken wars, alliances, and desires quietly clashing in the background.

And for the first time that evening, Lila felt she had an ally – one who could match her focus and patience, without demanding control, without distraction.

She took a slow breath and turned her attention to the proposals laid before her.

Tonight wasn’t just about deals.

It was about watching the players, measuring their strengths… and knowing exactly when to strike.
