In a secluded private villa on the outskirts of the city, the night was thick with silence.
Curtains swayed slightly from the warm breeze slipping through the half-open window. The room smelled faintly of wine and expensive cologne.
Maddy lay tangled in the sheets with the man beside her, their bodies still warm from the heat of the moment. For a brief second, she allowed herself to breathe, staring at the ceiling as her mind wandered back to the hospital… back to Lila waking up.
Suddenly-
“Ouch!” Maddy cried out.
The man had leaned down and bitten her shoulder, not playfully but hard enough to sting.
Maddy turned her head sharply toward him. “What was that for?” she asked, rubbing the sore spot.
The man propped himself up on one elbow and stared down at her. His eyes were dark, sharp… almost dangerous.
“You should focus on me,” he said quietly.
The tone in his voice made the air feel heavier.
Maddy quickly forced a smile and wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer as if nothing was
wrong.
“I am,” she said softly. “I’m just tired. Being pregnant is exhausting.”
For a moment, the man simply watched her.
Then he spoke again, casually, as if suggesting something trivial.
“If you’re tired… we can abort it.”
The words hung in the air.
Maddy’s stomach dropped.
She slowly looked up at him-and the horror crept into her chest when she realized he wasn’t joking. His expression remained calm, almost indifferent, as if the life inside her meant absolutely nothing.
A cold wave of fear washed through her.
Maddy immediately looked away.
“No… it’s okay,” she said quickly, forcing her voice to stay steady. “You want another heir, right?”

She tried to make it sound light, even teasing.
But inside. her heart was pounding.
Because in that moment she understood something terrifying.
The man beside her didn’t care about the child.
And if the child ever stopped being useful… neither would she.
Morning light spilled through the tall windows of the villa.
Maddy stirred slowly, the silk sheets cool against her skin. For a moment she lay still, listening.
From downstairs came the quiet clink of dishes.
She sat up.

When she walked into the kitchen, she found the man already there, standing by the counter. The smell of coffee and toasted bread filled the room as he calmly prepared breakfast, as if the tense night before had never happened.
Without turning around, he spoke.
“Come sit.”
Maddy pulled out a chair and sat at the table. A plate was placed in front of her-eggs, toast, and fruit. She began eating, though her mind was already working.
After a few quiet moments, she spoke.
“What do you think of Damon’s marriage?”
The man paused slightly before turning to look at her, confusion flickering across his face.
“What about it?”
Maddy shrugged lightly as she cut into her food.
“I mean… they’ve been married for three years,” she said. “But still no child.”
She glanced up at him, watching his reaction carefully.
“I heard Lila enrolled for her master’s degree,” the man replied flatly as he poured coffee. “Maybe Damon simply supported her endeavor.”
Maddy gave a small, doubtful smile.
“Well, for me it’s suspicious,” she said. “Maybe their marriage is nothing but a contract.”
The man’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“What makes you say that?”
Maddy leaned back in her chair.

“Well,” she began slowly, “in order for Damon to claim his position as the head of the Blackthorne family, he must be married, right?”
She tapped her finger lightly on the table.
“And before Lila, I never heard any rumors about women Damon dated. Then suddenly he marries… an accountant from the company.”
Her eyes sharpened slightly.
“Doesn’t that sound strange?”
The man didn’t answer right away.
Maddy continued, testing the waters.
“Do you think Damon’s father, Richard Blackthorne, is even alive?” she asked casually. “Or are they just hiding him somewhere?”
This time the man finally looked at her properly.
Really looked.
His deep gaze felt heavy, like he was weighing every word she had spoken.
Maddy held his gaze, though inside she was tense.
She wanted information.
Needed it.
Because beneath his calm expression, she knew this man was far from ordinary.
She had first met him years ago at a charity gala, when her family name had already collapsed and the elite circles had shut their doors to her.
With just a few quiet words and a few invisible strings pulled behind the scenes, he had opened those doors again.
Just like that.
That was the moment Maddy realized something important.
A man who could move people and power so effortlessly…
Was never just a simple man.

And if anyone knew the truth about the Blackthorne family-
It would be him.
The man slowly set the coffee cup down.
A faint, unreadable smile touched his lips.
“You’re very curious this morning,” he said quietly. “That can be… dangerous.”

“You know something, don’t you?” Maddy pressed, her voice light as she offered him a sweet smile.
The man didn’t immediately respond. He simply continued cutting his food with slow, deliberate
movements.
Then he looked up at her.
“Why are you so curious about another man’s marriage?” he asked, his eyes steady on hers.
Before she could answer, a faint grin spread across his face.
“Or maybe,” he continued lazily, “you still can’t move on from Damon… after you dumped him and he didn’t bother chasing you.”
Maddy’s smile stiffened.
“No, that’s not-”
“What exactly are you trying to accomplish, Maddy?” he cut in, his voice calm but sharp.
The question hung between them like a blade.
Maddy straightened slightly in her chair.
“Nothing,” she said. “I’m just curious about their marriage.”
The man watched her for a long moment, as if peeling apart every layer of that answer.
Then he leaned back.
“Are you trying to destroy their marriage?” he asked bluntly. “Become the cheap mistress everyone whispers about?”
His words were almost casual, but the accusation inside them was clear.
Maddy’s eyes flashed with irritation.
“No,” she said firmly. “And I’m not some cheap mistress.”
She crossed her arms slightly, lifting her chin.

“Damon and I ended years ago. And besides…” she added smoothly, “you’re my only lover.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The man simply nodded once, as if acknowledging the statement but not fully believing it.
Then he returned to eating.
Just like that.
Maddy watched him quietly.
And once again, the familiar frustration crept into her mind.
After all these years… she still couldn’t read him.
Not truly.

He was like a puzzle with missing pieces-calm, controlled, always a few steps ahead. Sometimes he seemed amused by her, sometimes indifferent, and sometimes… something colder.
Maddy stirred her coffee slowly.
She had shared his bed, his secrets, his nights.
Yet somehow…
She still felt like she was standing outside a locked door, trying to guess what lay behind it.
