Chapter 72

The hospital room was quiet when Maddy arrived.

When she stepped inside, she found Lila sitting up in bed, a book resting in her hands. Sunlight from the window fell across the pages as Lila calmly read, as if the world outside the room didn’t concern her.

Maddy closed the door behind her.

“Good to see you, Lila,” she said with a smooth smile.

Lila slowly looked up from her book.

“Same,” she replied plainly.

Her eyes returned to the page for a second before she added, “And what brought you here, Maddy?”

Maddy scoffed softly at the cold tone.

She walked further into the room, folding her arms.

“Did you know,” Maddy began casually, “while you were in a coma… Damon and I slept together so many times I lost count.”

A grin curled on her lips as she watched Lila closely.

“Even though I’m pregnant, he still wouldn’t let me go,” she added mockingly. “Damon was so hungry.”

Lila slowly turned a page in her book.

Then she looked up again.

“What do you want me to do about it?” she asked calmly.

She placed the book down on her lap and finally met Maddy’s eyes fully.

The lack of reaction clearly irritated Maddy.

“Lila,” she said sharply, “why do you still cling to Damon?”

Lila tilted her head slightly.

“Well,” she said evenly, “I tried to make him sign a divorce agreement.”

She paused, her gaze steady.

“But he refused. Again… and again… and again.”

Silence filled the room for a moment.

Then Lila added, her voice cool and cutting:

“Maybe he really loves me… and you’re just his bed warmer.”

Maddy’s face twisted with anger.

Her hand shot up, ready to slap Lila-

But Lila had already seen it coming.

Without hesitation, she grabbed the book and threw it.

The hard cover struck Maddy squarely on the nose.

“Ah!” Maddy gasped.

Blood immediately began dripping down from her nose as she staggered back.

At that exact moment, the door opened.

Damon stepped inside.

Behind him stood his mother, Margaret.

They both froze for a moment at the sight of Maddy holding her bleeding nose.

Maddy quickly turned toward Damon, tears suddenly filling her eyes.

“Damon,” she cried softly. “I just came to visit and talk with Lila… but she got angry and threw a book at me.”

Her voice trembled as she wiped the blood with the back of her hand.

“Lila, I’m not trying to steal your husband,” she continued, sobbing lightly. “I’m not like that.”

Lila looked at her with complete indifference.

“Are you done?” Lila said flatly.

Then she leaned back against her pillow.

“If you are… leave.”

Maddy looked at Damon pleadingly, her eyes wide and wounded.

Damon said nothing for a moment before gently guiding Maddy toward the door.

“Let’s step outside,” he said quietly.

As they left the room, Margaret remained where she stood.

Her sharp eyes followed Maddy carefully.

Her expression was calm.

Unreadable.

But there was something cold in her gaze-something that suggested she had already seen through far more than Maddy realized.

Margaret quietly pulled a chair beside Lila’s bed and sat down with composed elegance.

“How are you, dear?” Margaret asked, offering Lila a warm smile.

“I’m good, Mother,” Lila replied.

She adjusted the blanket slightly before adding, “You didn’t have to bother coming here.”

Margaret waved her hand gently.

“Oh no, you’re never a bother,” she said.

For a few moments they exchanged small pleasantries-the sort that sounded polite but carried deeper meanings beneath the surface.

Then Lila tilted her head slightly.

“So… you won’t ask me why I threw a book at Maddy?”

Margaret’s lips curved into a small smile.

“No,” she said calmly. “Perhaps Maddy deserved it.”

Lila studied her carefully.

Margaret folded her hands neatly on her lap before speaking again.

“I heard you’re trying to make Damon sign a divorce agreement,” she said, her eyes quietly observing Lila— calm, sharp, almost like a judge examining testimony.

“Is it because of Maddy?” Margaret asked.

Lila let out a slow breath.

Before she could answer, Margaret spoke again.

“Well,” she said lightly, “Damon must have forgotten something important.”

Her voice cooled slightly.

“There is no such thing as divorce in the Blackthorne family.”

Lila reached for her phone on the bedside table.

Without a word, she opened a series of messages and handed the phone to Margaret.

Margaret read silently.

The smile on her face slowly faded as her eyes moved down the screen. When she finished, she calmly handed the phone back.

“Don’t worry.” Margaret said quietly.

“He will face the consequences of his actions.”

She stood up.

The door opened almost immediately as if someone had been waiting outside.

The family butler stepped in.

Margaret didn’t even look at him when she gave the order.

“Prepare the chamber.”

The butler bowed slightly. “Yes, Madam.”

Margaret then turned back to Lila, her expression returning to its gentle composure.

“Rest well, dear,” she said softly before leaving the room.

The door closed behind her.

And somewhere in the Blackthorne estate, preparations had already begun.

For the next few weeks, Damon never came.

Not once.

At first, Lila told herself he was simply busy. The Blackthorne business empire did not pause for hospital visits. But as the days stretched into weeks, the silence became too deliberate to ignore.

No calls.

No messages.

Nothing.

On the day she was finally discharged, a familiar black car waited outside the hospital.

The Blackthorne family driver stepped out and opened the door for her.

“Madam.”

Lila nodded and got in.

The ride was quiet. The driver didn’t ask questions, and Lila didn’t offer any conversation. She simply watched the city pass by through the window until the familiar iron gates appeared.

The car drove straight through the long driveway toward Forest Villa.

When they arrived, the housekeeper was already waiting at the entrance.

“Welcome home, Madam,” she said with a small bow.

Lila stepped inside, the grand hall strangely quiet.

“Is Damon here?” Lila asked.

“Yes, Madam,” the housekeeper replied. “The master is in the study room.”

Lila instinctively looked up toward the second floor.

The study room door was at the far end of the hallway upstairs.

The last time she had seen him… was at the hospital.

When he guided Maddy outside.

And he never came back.

For a moment, Lila considered going upstairs.

But the exhaustion that had been quietly building inside her suddenly felt heavy.

“I’ll rest first,” she said instead.

She walked toward the master bedroom. The familiar scent of the room wrapped around her as soon as she stepped inside.

Without changing much, she laid down on the bed.

Sleep took her almost instantly.

A soft knock woke her hours later.

“Madam?” the housekeeper called gently from the other side of the door.

Lila sat up slowly.

“Yes?”

“Dinner is ready.”

“I’ll come down.”

She washed her face, changed into something comfortable, and went downstairs.

The dining room lights were already on, illuminating the long table.

But only one seat had been prepared.

Lila sat down.

“Where is Damon?” she asked.

The housekeeper lowered her gaze slightly.

“The master is still in the study room, Madam.”

Lila didn’t say anything else.

She noticed the housekeeper quickly retreating from the room, almost avoiding eye contact.

That small detail did not escape her.

The room fell silent again.

Lila picked up her fork and stared at the untouched food for a moment.

Then she gave a small laugh to herself.

“Maybe he doesn’t want to see me,” she murmured quietly.

The thought should have hurt.

But strangely…

It didn’t surprise her at all.
