CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND NINE CLAIRE’S POV
The moment door closed behind her, I turned to Nathaniel.
“You saw that,” I said quietly.
He didn’t pretend otherwise. “Yes.”
My grip tightened slightly against the sheets. “That wasn’t normal.”
“No,” he agreed.
The door opened again a few minutes later, and Margot stepped in.
Her presence shifted the room instantly- composed, sharp.
Her eyes moved quickly, assessing, taking everything in.
“What happened?” she asked.
I looked at her then. “There was a nurse.”
“That’s not unusual.”
“No,” I said slowly. “But she was.”
Margot didn’t dismiss it. Didn’t question it.
She simply nodded once, like she had expected something like this.
“I’ll handle it,” she said.
Then, after a brief pause-
“Lucian has started an investigation.”
My chest tightened slightly at his name. But I didn’t let my reaction show.
“He’s not here,” I said firmly.
“He’s working,” Margot replied. “And he’s not taking this lightly.”
Of course he wasn’t.
I looked away. “That doesn’t make me feel better.” I lied.
Margot’s gaze sharpened slightly. “I’m not taking it lightly either, Claire.” She said. “Because this wasn’t
an accident.”
The words landed harder this time, because now… I believed them.
She held my gaze for a second longer, then exhaled quietly, already shifting gears.

“I can’t stay,” she said, more to herself than to us. “Not right now.”
Nathaniel frowned slightly. “What do you mean?” He asked.
“I mean,” Margot replied, reaching for her phone, “someone just attempted to murder my employee at a high-profile event, and now something is off inside this hospital. That moves this beyond suspicion.”
Her tone was calm. The kind of calm that made me feel like she was taking some very deliberate, very serious steps.
“I’m pushing this higher,” she continued. “Authorities need to get involved. Immediately.”
Nathaniel straightened slightly. “You think they’ll act that fast?”
“They will,” Margot replied coolly, “when they realize Sinclair & Co. is prepared to file a lawsuit against Dhark Holdings for negligence.”
That made both Nathaniel and I pause. Even in my state, I felt the weight of that.
But Margot didn’t stop there.
“If they refuse to release full access to the event’s security footage,” she added, already dialing a number on her phone. “We’ll make it very public that they’re obstructing an investigation.”
Nathaniel let out a low breath. “That’s… aggressive.”
“It’s necessary.” Margot replied, her tone firm. Final.
She glanced at me then, and something passed through her eyes. Something deeper.
“And I’m already working on something else,” she added quietly.
Nathaniel looked at her, confused. “What something else?”
Margot didn’t answer him.
But I understood.
The file on Eva. My stomach tightened slightly as the realization dawned one me- this wasn’t just about tonight anymore.
Margot slipped her phone into her bag. “Stay with her,” she told Nathaniel. “Don’t let anyone in unless you’re sure.”
Then she looked at me again.
“This isn’t over,” she said.
“I know,” I replied quietly.
She nodded once, then walked out of the room.

It immediately felt quieter the moment the door closed behind her. Smaller.
Nathaniel exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair before looking at me.
“She’s intense,” he said.
“That’s one word for it.” I replied. “She’s Margot Sinclair.”
He huffed out a quiet breath, then his expression shifted slightly as he studied me. “You know what she
meant,” he observed.
It wasn’t a question.
I didn’t answer.
Because I did know.
And because saying it out loud would make it real in a way I wasn’t ready for.
“With everything that’s happened,” Nathaniel said carefully, “the way Lucian handled it… the way he’s handling this-”
I tensed slightly.
“He risked his life for you,” he continued. “He’s controlling the entire hospital staff. He hasn’t let anything
slip.”
I looked away. “And?” I asked, keeping my voice even.
Nathaniel didn’t hesitate. “He’s still in love with you.” He blurted out.
I shook my head immediately.
“No.”
“Claire-”
I didn’t let him continue. “If Lucian was in love with me,” I argued, my voice sharper now, “he wouldn’t have gotten another woman pregnant.”
Nathaniel fell silent.
“He wouldn’t have had an affair,” I continued, my chest tightening and my voice rising despite my effort
to stay composed. “He wouldn’t have handed me divorce papers like I was nothing.”
The words tasted bitter even as I said them. “He would have chosen me.”
The room went quiet again.
Nathaniel watched me carefully.
Then-

“Do you still have feelings for him?” The question was softer this time. But it hit deeper.
When I opened my mouth, no sound came out.
Then his phone rang.
Nathaniel glanced at the screen, his expression tightening immediately.
“I have to take this,” he said.
“Go,” I replied without hesitation.
He frowned slightly. “Claire-”
“You’ve been here all day,” I said gently. “I’ll be fine.”
He hesitated, still reluctant.
But whatever was on that call mattered.
“Call me if anything feels off,” he said finally.
“I will.”
He held my gaze for a second longer, then he stepped out.
The silence returned after the door closed behind him, heavier this time.
I lay in the hospital bed, staring at the ceiling again.
Listening. Waiting.
The feeling of unease crept back in slowly, like it had never really left.
Then door opened softly and my head turned instantly.
The same nurse.
My stomach dropped.
She didn’t look at me this time. Didn’t even speak.
She moved straight to the IV, like it was a target.
My eyes locked onto her hands.
She adjusted something small, then she turned and left.
Just like that.
I looked back at the IV. At the drip.
For a second- nothing happened.

Then, out of nowhere, it became faster.
My breath caught in my throat.
It was moving too fast. Way too fast.
Cold realization flooded through me.
“No.” I whispered.
My hand moved before I could think.
I ripped it out.
Pain flared through my hand sharply, but I barely felt it as I pushed myself upright.
“I need to leave.”
The words came out louder this time, urgent, even though no one else was in the room with me.
The door opened almost immediately. But it wasn’t Nathaniel.
