The Wife he threw Away (Claire and Lucian) novel Chapter 262

By the time I left Sinclair & Co., the sky had already begun to darken.

I sat in the back of the car, watching the city pass through the window while my mind remained somewhere else entirely.

Hart Sullivan.

The name had been sitting at the back of my mind since the moment Claire told me her suspicions.

She had given him her card— offered him a way to cooperate.

He hadn’t called once.

And now it seemed like the defense intended to put him on the witness stand.

The whole thing irritated me.

Not just because Hart was unpredictable— I already knew that.

But I knew exactly how much damage one carefully chosen— carefully worded— testimony could do.

Eva didn’t need Hart to prove her innocence. She only needed him to create doubt.

And in our line of work, doubt was dangerous.

Especially when a jury was being asked to decide whether a woman as beloved as Eva had orchestrated years of deception, financial crimes, violence and attempted murder.

I glanced down at my legs.

The doctors had told me to take it easy, as had Claire and my family.

Apparently, I had developed a reputation for ignoring medical advice.

I sighed. “Take me to the police station.”

My driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror.

“Are you sure ma’am?”

“Yes.”

“You should probably rest.”

“I’ve been told that more tikes than I can count today.”

He smiled faintly. “Then perhaps you should listen.”

“Perhaps you should drive.”

He laughed under his breath, then turned toward the police station.

The station was quieter than I expected.

A detective met me at the entrance the moment I arrived.

“Ms. Sinclair.”

“Good evening.”

He glanced at my wheelchair, then at me.

“You shouldn’t have come.”

“That’s not news.”
