CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-SIX MARGOT’S POV
I didn’t slow down.
Once one call ended, and another began almost immediately after. Instructions moved quickly, cleanly, and without repetition.
“Status?”
A brief pause on the other end.
“Still under investigation.”
“Good. Keep it that way.”
I ended the call before there was anything else to add. I was too busy for anything unnecessary.
My desk was already arranged-files aligned, notes marked, timelines mapped out with perfect precision.
The crash that had almost been fatal, the incident in the hospital, Claire’s report.
Eva needed to be brought to justice. And fast.
My gaze rested on Claire’s infertility report for a second longer than necessary.
Dr. Ramon.
I had requested a meeting.
He had stubbornly refused.
What he didn’t know was that even more stubborn than he was, especially when it involved cases like
this.
I closed the file and reached for my keys.
Refusal didn’t end conversations, it simply redirected them.
The hospital parking lot was already filling by the time I arrived.
Staff moved in and out, cars pulled in. Everything was predictable- routine.
I leaned lightly against my car and waited.
I didn’t have to wait very long.
Dr. Ramon’s vehicle pulled in a few minutes later-sharp and controlled, like everything else about him.
He was a tall, slightly balding man, with glasses half the size of his face.
He stepped out of his car, adjusting his coat, already moving toward the entrance before he noticed me.

He slowed down noticeably, and recognition showed in his expression half a second later.
I straightened.
“Dr. Ramon.”
He didn’t greet me.
The man almost scowled.
“I already declined your request,” he said, tone clipped. “I don’t see what makes you think that would change today.”
I didn’t argue.
“You’ve been selective about your clients,” I said instead. “Especially when it comes to Eva Sterling.”
A flicker.
Small, but very much present.
His expression hardened almost immediately after.
“I don’t discuss patients.” He stated sternly.
One would think he’s an ethical, morally upright medical professional.
I smiled. “Of course not.”
I stepped forward-not close enough to crowd him, but close enough that he had to acknowledge me fully.
“We can do this here,” I said calmly. “Or we can do it formally. Tomorrow, of course.”
He held my gaze- measured and calculating. He was weighing his options.
Then-
“Five minutes,” he said curtly, turning toward the entrance.
I didn’t respond.
I simply followed.
Dr. Ramon’s office was exactly what I expected:
Clean, clinical and calming.
He took his seat behind the desk, reclaiming what little authority he could.
I didn’t sit immediately.

I let the silence settle first, before taking the chair opposite him.
I stared at him for a moment, calm and composed.
Already ahead. Perhaps he could see that too.
I placed the file on the table between us and slid it forward slightly. It was Claire’s infertility report.
“This is a medical report signed by you.” I stated. “Walk me through it.”
He didn’t touch it.
But he began speaking- clinical, structured and efficient. Just like I expected.
Diagnosis. Observations. Conclusion.
Everything aligned.
Everything sounded correct.
I listened without interrupting him.
Then when he I was sure he was done explaining, I asked;
“How did you meet Eva Sterling?”
The shift was immediate.
Dr. Ramon looked like I had struck him.
His face contorted into a tight frown. “That’s not relevant.”
“It is to me.”
He leaned back slightly, defensive now. “I don’t discuss patients.”
I studied him for a moment before speaking again.
“I’ve reviewed your history,” I paused. “You’ve been… helpful to her before.”
His jaw tightened.
“I don’t know what you’re implying.”
“When you’ve been in the medical field for almost two decades, you don’t make mistakes like this, Doctor.” I said, tapping the file once. “You make decisions.”
Silence stretched.
He broke it first.
“You don’t have anything that holds in court.” He said, his tone laced with the kind of confidence that came with sheer determination.

I nodded once.
“You’re right.”
That seemed to catch him off guard.
“But I don’t need what holds in court,” I continued evenly, leaning forward slightly.
“I need what holds under review.”
The words settled slowly.
He understood exactly what I was saying. Good.
“Medical board,” I added. “Licensing authority. Internal audits.”
His expression didn’t change, but his posture did.
“All I need,” I continued, “is a second test from the patient you diagnosed.”
I let that sit.
“If the results don’t match what you signed-”
I didn’t finish the sentence.
Because I didn’t need to.
Dr. Ramon’s gaze shifted briefly to the file, then back to me.
