CHAPTER SIXTEEN_ Claire’s POV

Less than an hour after the gala, I contacted an old classmate of mine, who had grown into a prominent lawyer. That was how I was able to get Margot’s phone number.
I waited until the house went quiet before I sent the message.
It was a simple, professional text.
‘Thank you for the opportunity to apply at Sinclair&co. Although my application was rejected, I would appreciate the chance to discuss further.’
I stared at the screen for a moment before setting my phone aside.
I couldn’t keep putting all my hope on Margot. But if nothing came of it, at least I’d spoken for myself.
Someone knocked on the door once.
“Mrs. Dhark,” Camilla called softly. “They’re waiting for you downstairs.”
They.
“Give me a minute.” I replied.
Who exactly was waiting? I felt my stomach tighten.
After all that had happened recently, I wasn’t ready for another surprise.
Or another humiliation.
I walked downstairs shortly after Camilla left, just to see Eva seated at the head of the sitting room with her legs crossed.
Her posture was immaculate and regal, like a woman who knew the world now belonged to her.
Lucian didn’t look at me when I came in. He stood by the window, with his back turned to the room.
Camilla stood near the doorway, quiet.
Eva gestured to the chair opposite her.
“Sit, Claire.” She said.
I remained standing.
Eva didn’t mind. She folded her hands over her stomach-a deliberate gesture.
“We’ve been discussing the living arrangements,” she began. “Given the current circumstances, we think it’s best to make a few adjustments.”
My chest felt tight, but I managed to keep my voice steady. “What kind of adjustments?” I questioned.

Eva smiled. “You’ll be moving into the west guesthouse.”
My heart stilled.
“It’s private,” she continued. “Comfortable, and more appropriate, given… everything.”
That’s when Lucian finally turned. But he didn’t contradict her. He didn’t even try to stand up for me.
“This will reduce tension,” he added, backing her up. “For everyone.”
I looked at him then. Really looked.
For a man who was kicking his wife of five years out of his home, he didn’t look uncomfortable or
conflicted.
He looked resolved.
“So, I’m being removed.” I said quietly.
It was more of a statement than a question.
Because if there was anything I knew about Lucian, it’s that his decision was final.
Eva smiled softly at me, as if I were a child misunderstanding something obvious.
“Think of it as a transition.”
A transition to what?
I noticed Camilla shift slightly behind me. But she too, said nothing.
Lucian checked his watch.
“The staff will help you pack what you need.”
He spoke as if the matter was already concluded. As if our marriage was a failing asset he had to sell at
scrap value.
“What I need.” I repeated, still in disbelief.
Eva smiled sharply. Cunningly.
“You won’t need much.”
Something inside me twisted.
How had I gone from an aspiring lawyer with a bright future, to a wife being cast out of her home like a mere beggar?
That’s when I remembered something. The only leverage I had left.
“I haven’t signed the papers yet.” I argued.

The room changed, and so did their expressions.
Eva’s fingers tightened against her own hand.
Lucian’s jaw clenched.
“That deadline still stands.” He said. “End of the week.”
“I’m aware,” I replied. “But until then, I’m still your wife.”
Eva flashed a knowing smile at me.
