The Wife he threw Away (Claire and Lucian) novel Chapter 161

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY-ONE EVA’S POV

The moment the call ended, I threw my phone onto the marble counter hard enough for the sound to echo through the penthouse.

My chest rose sharply once.

Then twice.

Then I laughed softly under my breath- not because anything was funny.

But because Lucian Dhark had accused me of attempted murder.

And worse- he had meant it.

The accusation itself didn’t offend me.

The fact that he believed it did.

I stared out across the room, my lips pursed.

The entire country still adored me.

Flowers continued arriving by the hour. Brand deals flooded my management team.

Public sympathy climbed higher and higher every day.

Women cried for me online, sharing their own stories of domestic violence.

And the men? They were the best part. They threatened Lucian publicly on my behalf.

And yet somehow, everything still felt like it was slipping through my fingers.

Because Claire Moreau had refused to disappear.

Because Lucian had stopped looking at me like I was innocent.

And worse, Margot Sinclair was still alive.

I picked up my phone again and dialed another number.

He answered immediately.

“You failed.” I said through gritted teeth.

Silence.

Then-

“No,” the man replied calmly. “I was interrupted.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Margot Sinclair is still breathing.” I stated calmly, even though I was fuming. “That sounds like failure to

me.”

“She was seconds away from dying.”

“Yet somehow she didn’t.” I countered, barely able to contain my anger anymore.

His voice remained maddeningly level.

“Lucian Dhark intervened.” His name.

Something sharp and ugly twisted inside me.

I almost scoffed. “You let Lucian Dhark stop you?”

“He’s not an amateur.”

I turned sharply away from the windows.

“He reacted faster than most trained men I’ve worked against,” the man continued evenly. “And unlike most civilians, he understood immediately what was happening.”

I said nothing.

Because part of me already knew that Lucian had always been dangerous in ways people

underestimated.

But he had no military background I knew of.

The man continued. “I also had no intention of hurting him, since you seem to care about him so much.”

That snapped something inside me instantly. “I don’t care anymore.”

Silence followed- cold and decisive.

Then his voice lowered slightly. “Eva.”

“No,” I cut in sharply. “You listen to me.”

I started pacing the room slowly, my heels clicking against polished marble.

“Margot Sinclair is alive. Lucian is suspicious and accusing me of everything. Claire Moreau is involved. And somehow all of you are becoming liabilities.”

The words left my mouth before I could soften them.

A pause followed.

“You’re emotional,” he observed quietly.

That infuriated me even more.

“I am practical!”

“No,” he said calmly. “You’re losing control.”

I stopped walking immediately.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

“If you have to cripple Lucian, do it.” I said quietly. “I don’t care anymore.”

Even saying the words felt strange.

Because once upon a time, the thought would have horrified me.

Once upon a time, I would have done anything to protect him- well, not anything.

But now?

Now, survival mattered more than affection.

“The important thing,” I continued coldly, “is getting that report back.”

Silence.

“And whatever else Margot Sinclair uncovered.” I added.

“The hospital is impregnable now,” he said. “Dhark’s security locked the entire floor down. Armed personnel. External surveillance.”

Of course Lucian had done that.

I closed my eyes briefly. “Then find another way.”

Another pause.

“I can try accessing the report through the clinic records instead. Or visit Sinclair&co.”

“Yes,” I said immediately. “Do that.”

Before someone else did.

The line disconnected shortly afterward, and I stood there alone for a long moment afterward.

The penthouse was immaculate. Beautiful and expensive, as befitted a woman of my status.

But after the call, it started to feel unbearably suffocating.

My eyes drifted toward the television mounted across the room.

Claire appeared again briefly in another legal segment.
