The Wife he threw Away (Claire and Lucian) novel Chapter 310

“Congratulations, Claire.”

Eva’s voice stayed with me long after her footsteps disappeared.

I remained standing there, one hand pressed against my stomach.

My heart was still beating too fast.

Not because Eva had threatened me, but because now I was certain she knew.

She knew about my pregnancy, even though I had never told her.

I had to keep reminding myself that I had only told four people: Lucian, Camilla, Margot and Nathaniel.

People I trusted with my life.

And somehow, Eva had now found out.

I took a slow breath and forced myself to stand, checking my reflection in the mirror before leaving the bathroom.

God, I looked pale as a ghost.

I fixed a few strands of hair, and straightened my jacket.

I was a lawyer.

I couldn’t walk back into that courtroom looking like Eva had won something. I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction of knowing that I still cared—or worse, still feared what she could do.

So I walked back in.

Margot looked at me the moment I approached.

She didn’t need to ask if I was okay to know that I wasn’t.

“What happened?”

I leaned closer. “Eva knows.”

Margot’s eyes narrowed. “Knows what?”

“The pregnancy.”

For a second, she said nothing.

Then her expression changed. Not panic or fear, but something else.

“What exactly did she say?”

“‘Congratulations, Claire.’” I quoted.

Margot’s jaw tightened. “Anything else?”

“She said I should learn that happiness doesn’t last.”

Margot stared toward the courtroom doors. “Did she mention the baby specifically?”

“No.”

“Did she mention the hospital?”

“No.”

“Did she say how she knew?”

“No.”

Margot nodded slowly. “Good.”

I frowned. “Good?”

“Her knowing isn’t evidence of anything.”

I stared at her.

She continued quietly. “It matters—of course it matters. But right now, we don’t know how she obtained the information. If we start accusing her without knowing the source, we give her an opportunity to turn this around and possibly come up with a lawsuit.”

I exhaled.

Margot was right. I hated that she was right.

“So what do I do?”

“We find out how she knows. We find out who leaked your information.”

Those words steadied me.

But the thought that someone I trusted could have betrayed me? That they could have been Eva’s source? That haunted me.

I looked toward Eva.

She was seated across the courtroom, speaking quietly with her attorney.

She looked perfectly composed—almost bored. As if Hart hadn’t just spent the morning telling the court about everything she’d ordered him to do.

As if she hadn’t followed me into a bathroom to remind me that she knew something she shouldn’t know.

I looked away.

My mind started retracing everything—

The hospital, the appointment, pregnancy test.

At what point could someone else have found out I was pregnant? Could the doctor or hospital staff possibly have any connections with Eva?

It wasn’t impossible. Eva knew how to network. She had connections everywhere.

I still remembered how I had been rejected after an interview at Sinclair&co because one of the interviewers was connected to Eva.

I suddenly remembered the photograph again. The picture of me leaving the hospital.

My stomach tightened.

“Margot.”

She looked at me.

“The photograph.”

“What about it?”

“What if that wasn’t the first time I had been watched?”

Her expression changed.

I continued. “Whoever took that photograph was watching me before I even knew I was pregnant.”

Margot went quiet. I could almost see the pieces arranging themselves in her mind.

Someone had been watching me for God knows how long. Possibly for longer than I realized.

“You’re right,” Margot agreed. “It isn’t the first time.”

I swallowed. “How much does Eva know?”

“That,” Margot said, “is exactly what we need to find out.”

Before I could respond, the courtroom doors opened.

The bailiff announced the return of the court and everyone started moving back inside.

I forced myself to focus, but the question stayed in the back of my mind.

Who told Eva?

And more importantly—
