The Wife he threw Away (Claire and Lucian) novel Chapter 325

The courtroom had barely settled after the judge dismissed the defense’s attempt to drag my university rumors into the proceedings when Eva’s attorney rose to his feet again.

“Your Honor, the defense would like to address the prosecution’s repeated characterization of my client as a liar.”

Here we go.

I straightened in my seat.

The attorney adjusted his tie and turned toward the judge with the confidence of a man who believed he could make anything sound reasonable if he spoke thoroughly enough.

“Throughout these proceedings, the plaintiff and his team has attempted to portray Ms. Sterling as someone who fabricated an entire pregnancy, invented a miscarriage, and deliberately deceived Mr. Dhark,” he stated. “Yet the evidence presented so far does not establish that my client was never pregnant. Nor does it conclusively establish that Mr. Dhark did not physically assault her.”

A few people in the gallery shifted in their seats.

From the corner of my eyes, I saw Eva nod in agreement. She looked composed as ever, like a woman who had never told a lie in her life.

I wanted to laugh.

Instead, I rose to my feet.

“Objection, Your Honor. Counsel is attempting to reinforce allegations without addressing the evidence that directly contradicts his client’s account.”

The judge glanced at me. “Explain.”

“Dr. Ramon has already testified under oath that Ms. Sterling paid him to falsify medical information and manipulate Mr. Dhark into believing she was pregnant. We have evidence of their communication, evidence of the payments, and testimony establishing that the medical records presented to Mr. Dhark were deliberately manipulated.”

I turned toward Eva’s attorney. “If the defense intends to establish that Ms. Sterling was genuinely pregnant, then it needs to present credible medical evidence supporting that claim. Just repeating the allegation does not make it true.”

Her attorney gave me a thin smile. “An interesting argument, Ms. Moreau. But Dr. Ramon’s testimony does not automatically establish that every medical record associated with Ms. Sterling was fraudulent. Neither does it establish that she could not have been pregnant at some point during her relationship with Mr. Dhark—“

I interrupted. “She could not have, because her real medical records showed proof of infertility.”

He paused. “And as for the alleged assault, my client has consistently maintained that Mr. Dhark became physically aggressive toward her. The fact that she cannot produce a witness who stood in the room at the exact moment of the incident does not mean it never happened.”

My fingers tightened around my pen. “That is not what we are arguing.”

“Then perhaps you would care to clarify your position.”

I heaved a frustrated breath, then rose a little straighter.

“My client is not required to accept every allegation Ms. Sterling makes simply because she repeats it,” I said.

“My position is very clear: Mr. Dhark was deceived into believing she was pregnant. He was manipulated into making decisions based on information he was made to believe to be genuine. That deception contributed to the breakdown of his marriage and caused substantial damage to his personal and professional life.”

“And yet,” the attorney interrupted smoothly, “Mr. Dhark believed her pregnancy was real enough to bring her into his home and allow the situation to disrupt his marriage.”

The words landed exactly where he intended them to. He wanted the court to see Lucian’s decisions as evidence that Eva’s claims were credible.

I mean if Lucian himself had believed that she was pregnant and made so many decisions around that, then she was most likely pregnant.

I could already imagine the headlines if his argument gained traction.

The attorney continued. “Why would a man move a pregnant woman into his home, risk his marriage, and accept the consequences of such a scandal if there had been no confirmation of a pregnancy?”

“Because my client was deceived.” I stated again.

Unfortunately, the words came out sharper than I intended. More aggressive.
