The Wife he threw Away (Claire and Lucian) novel Chapter 35

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE CLAIRE’S POV

Three days changed everything.

Not dramatically, not loudly, but unmistakably.

The moment the car turned onto the street leading to Sinclair & Co., I saw them.

Cameras.

Two reporters stood near the opposite sidewalk pretending to check their phones while watching the building entrance too closely.

A third one leaned against a parked car, speaking quietly into an earpiece.

They were all waiting for me.

I saw the driver glance at me through the mirror, uncertain whether to continue or not.

“It’s fine,” I assured him calmly. “Pull in.”

The car slowed, waiting for the gates to be opened.

Thankfully, the security guard at the entrance moved quicker than usual, opening the gate before we fully

stopped.

The moment I stepped out, flashes flickered in my face- curious but cautious. They were standing in front of Margot Sinclair’s law firm after all. They couldn’t be as persistent as they would’ve surely liked.

So instead, they tested boundaries rather than attacking.

No one shouted questions.

And somehow, that almost felt even worse.

They were studying me, measuring how this story would unfold.

The atmosphere wasn’t the same inside the building either.

Phones rang constantly. Conversations lowered as I passed. A few employees tried their best to greet me normally, while others pretended not to look at all.

I walked toward reception, keeping my chin up and my shoulders straight, as my heels clicked against the marble floor.

“Good morning, Ms. Moreau,” the receptionist greeted gently as she slid a stack of envelopes toward me. “These came in this morning.”

My name.

Not Mrs. Dhark, just Claire Moreau.

The small difference steadied me more than it should have.

I nodded in thanks, then turned toward the elevator.

That’s when I stopped. A business news ticker was playing silently on the lobby screen.

A photo from the charity event flashed briefly.

Lucian beside Eva.

And somewhere in the background – barely visible – me.

I looked away before the image could settle. I told myself it didn’t matter. I wouldn’t let it ruin my day.

But the truth was, this was no longer a private divorce.

It was quickly turning into a public event.

Margot’s office felt like the only controlled space left in the world.

I was glad to step foot in it.

She barely looked up when I entered, already surrounded by files, legal pads, and a laptop filled with open documents.

“You saw them outside,” she said as I stepped in.

“Yes.”

“They’ll multiply,” she replied calmly, focused on the document in front of her. “Ignore them.”

Then she handed me a tablet.

My inbox flooded the screen.

Interview invitations, feature requests, statements framed as sympathy. As opportunities.

“We’d love to give Claire the chance to share her truth.”

“Women across the country are supporting you.”

“An exclusive interview could reshape public perception.”

I exhaled slowly, already exhausted of the same old opportunistic attempts.

“They’re being polite,” I stated.

“They’re hunting,” Margot corrected.

She shut the tablet with a final click.

“Sympathy is currency,” she said, determination shining in her eyes. “Don’t spend it explaining yourself.”

I nodded.

For once, doing nothing felt intentional, instead of weak.

Going through the legal documents was much worse.

Stacks of disclosures covered the desk – financial summaries, corporate structures, asset evaluations, contractual interpretations and so much more.

Reading through all the documents was excruciating. It was almost like the Dhark legal team was trying

to suffocate me.

I turned page after page.

Accounts, holdings, trust structures.

Every document seemed designed to exhaust rather than inform.

“They’re not negotiating,” I said quietly.

Margot looked up. “No, they’re preparing to bury you in process.” She didn’t sugarcoat it.

I stared at the paperwork again.

Every line felt like a reminder of how large Lucian’s world truly was, and how small mine had once been

inside it.

How hadn’t I seen it for five years?

I hadn’t been married to the man. I had been married to the empire.

And now, I’m not just fighting Lucian, but the empire itself.

Fear crept in, along with exhaustion.

I shook my head. Not now.

“They want you overwhelmed,” she said, snapping me out of my own thoughts. “Confused people settle quickly.”

I closed the folder carefully.

“I won’t.” I stated, with dwindling determination.

Margot studied me for a moment, then continued her work.

That evening, returning home felt stranger than facing reporters outside.

The mansion was the same – immaculate gardens, tall walls, lights glowing warmly through the windows.

But something had shifted.

I met Camilla in the corridor.

She paused.

Then greeted me with a curt nod, lowered her gaze and walked away.

I nodded to myself after she left, because I knew this was only the beginning.

The house already felt like it belonged to someone else.

I had declared war against the owner of the mansion, whilst still living in it. Against the very structure that governed the mansion and the city. Against one of the greatest empires the country had ever seen.

Merely hoping anyone would take my side, was foolish.

Lucian too, had changed. He didn’t argue with me anymore.

That might have frightened me more than his fury ever did.

Later that night, I opened my phone to read a message from him.

My legal team will contact you tomorrow regarding scheduling.

Please respond promptly.

No emotion, just logistics.

Cold, efficient and professional.

I stared at the message for longer than necessary.

And just like that, I had stopped being a wife to Lucian Dhark.

I had become a situation.

An article circulated across every major news outlet the next morning.

Photos of Eva smiling beside children, donors, and executives filled every screen i turned to.

THE STERLING FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES GLOBAL MOTHERHOOD INITIATIVE

Lucian’s name appeared beneath hers as primary patron.

Family legacy.

Future generations.

The message was subtle, but unmistakable.

The Dhark future continued without me.

I looked away from the television.

Eva hadn’t needed another conversation.

She had simply moved forward, and allowed the world to draw its own conclusions.

I had to admit, Eva was good at playing the long game. She had mastered the art of manipulating public

perception.

Her earlier words echoed quietly in my memory, over and over again.

“Court will give you attention, Claire… but it won’t give you what this family actually wanted from you – a

child.”

I set the phone down carefully.

It hurt.

But I wouldn’t let it break me.

Not anymore.

Back at Sinclair & Co., I sat in an office with Margot and two other lawyers.

That’s when Margot finally spoke the timeline aloud.
