CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE CLAIRE’S POV
I closed the front door behind me carefully as I stepped into the mansion.
It was quiet that night. The only thing louder than my footsteps was the sound of Nathaniel’s voice, echoing in my mind. 1
“She builds narratives.”
“She’ll dismantle your credibility.”
And the worst part-
“They’ll use the infertility.”
I walked slowly through the dimly lit hall, with the sound of my heels clicking softly against the marble
floor.
So many thoughts kept invading my mind.
The realization that Lucian wasn’t just fighting me in court, but was also preparing to destroy me emotionally and strategically was frightening.
And admittedly, it hurt.
I turned toward the library.
The door was open and the lights were on.
I spotted Lucian almost immediately, standing near the large window, with his right hand resting lightly against the back of a chair.
His jacket had been removed, and his sleeves were rolled up just enough to expose the clean lines of his
forearms.
He looked up the moment I stepped inside.
“You’re home late.” He said.
His voice was calm. Too calm.
Then I realized something immediately:
He had been waiting.
“I suppose I am,” I replied quietly.
Lucian studied me in silence for a long moment.
Then he asked the next question directly.
“Did you meet Nathaniel tonight?”

The words made me stop in my tracks.
My first instinct was to ask how he knew.
But something in Lucian’s expression told me that would be pointless. He would never reveal how he had found out.
So instead, I chose to answer honestly.
“Yes.” I said.
Lucian didn’t react.
No anger, no visible irritation.
Just that steady, firm analytical gaze.
He followed up with another question. “What did he want?”
I moved a little farther into the room, contemplating between answering honestly or not answering at all.
“He warned me about your new lawyer.” I disclosed.
Lucian didn’t deny it. Instead he turned slightly toward the window again, so he wouldn’t see my face.
“Victoria Merlyn wins.” He stated.
The certainty in his voice was unsettling. Actually, it was downright frightening.
“At what cost?” I asked.
Lucian didn’t hesitate. “The cost of losing.” He answered in a beat, like it was the most obvious thing in
the world.
The simplicity of his answer made my chest tighten slightly.
To Lucian, the calculation was clear. Winning was the only thing that mattered.
Everything else was secondary.
I folded my arms in front of my chest as I stared at Lucian.
“Did you know Nathaniel would step down?”
Lucian stared back at me.
“Yes.” He answered simply.
The honesty of his answer surprised me. But then again, Lucian rarely ever lied- what consequences did a man of his status have to fear anyways?
“You expected it?” I asked.

“I did.”
“Why?” I asked, frowning slightly.
Lucian walked toward the table, resting his hands lightly against its surface.
“Nathaniel refused to push certain arguments.” He revealed.
“And you needed someone who would.” I said, realization dawning on me slowly.
“Yes.”
The bluntness in his tone as he admitted it made the room feel colder. Smaller. More constricted.
For a moment neither of us spoke.
Then I finally asked the question that had been lingering in my mind since the café.
“Will your new lawyer use the infertility?”
Lucian went completely still.
But it only lasted one short moment.
Then he answered. “If it helps the case.”
A quiet ache spread through my chest after he said that.
Righy from the start of this legal battle, Lucian had always shown me that he would do anything to make sure the prenup stands, no matter how much it would hurt me.
What really surprised me was how much it did hurt me.
Because that’s when the memories would suddenly return.
The doctor’s office. Carefully measured words.
The white walls of the hospital.
All the months I had waited that slowly stretched into years.
The nights I had prayed and cried.
Lucian’s nonchalance…
I forced myself to meet his eyes.
“Did it matter to you that much?” I choked out, feeling the tears threatening to spill from my eyes.
Lucian didn’t answer immediately. For once, his composure seemed slightly less certain, almost like he was scared to say the wrong thing.
Then he blinked and it was gone.

That’s when he said something unexpected. “It mattered to everyone else.”
I frowned, then shook my head slightly, willing the tears to disappear.
“My father,” he continued. “The board. The people who believe a name like mine should continue.”
He paused briefly. “The Dhark legacy.”
The word lingered in the air.
“But not you?” I asked quietly.
Lucian looked at me.
For a moment something complicated flickered behind his marine blue eyes.
Then it disappeared.
“That wasn’t the problem,” he said.
I didn’t ask him to explain. Because I suspected he wouldn’t anyways.
Silence settled between us again.
“This conversation was enlightening.” I said as I turned towards the door.
Lucian’s voice stopped me just before I stepped into the hallway.
“Claire.” He called.
I paused.
“There’s something else.”
