CHAPTER SEVENTY-THREE CLAIRE’S POV
Margot’s office door was already open when I arrived.
She didn’t look up immediately, because her attention was fixed on the screen in front of her.
“Close the door,” she said the moment she heard me enter.
I did.
The click echoed a little too loudly in the quiet room.
“What happened?” I asked.
Margot finally looked at me.
Her expression was controlled, but there was something beneath it.
Annoyance. Sharp and focused.
“They’ve escalated,” she said.
“Who?”
She didn’t answer directly.
Instead, she turned her laptop toward me.
“Read.”
I stepped closer and looked into the laptop.
My eyes moved over the statement.
The first thing I noticed was how clean it was. Polished, and carefully worded.
Every sentence was deliberate and intentional. Meant to have massive effect.
“Ms. Eva Sterling is currently navigating an extremely difficult personal situation with grace and
restraint.”
My jaw tightened slightly as I read.
“Despite recent events, she remains committed to maintaining peace-for her wellbeing and for the sake of her unborn child.”
I kept reading.
“While the incident at Dhark Holdings was unfortunate, Ms. Sterling has chosen not to pursue legal action against Mrs. Claire Dhark at this time.”
I paused as my eyes moved slower over the next line.

“Given Mrs. Dhark’s ongoing legal proceedings, Ms. Sterling believes it is more appropriate to allow the court to address matters without further escalation.”
It was graceful. Measured.
In fact, they made Eva sound generous and kind- everything she wasn’t.
Every word was positioned exactly where it needed to be.
“Ms. Sterling hopes that Mrs. Dhark finds the peace and clarity she needs during this difficult time.”
My grip tightened slightly at my side as I forced myself to continue reading.
“She remains focused on protecting her own wellbeing and that of her child. Recent behaviors have raised concerns for Ms. Sterling’s safety, and appropriate precautions are being considered.”
That’s when my breathing went completely still.
“At this time, Ms. Sterling wishes only for privacy, stability, and the opportunity to move forward without further distress.”
Silence settled in the room, heavy and precise.
I didn’t need to reread it. 1
I understood it perfectly the first time. And I knew what it meant and how the public would perceive it.
When I finally looked up, Margot was already watching me.
“They’re not just responding,” she said. “They’re shaping.”
I let out a slow breath.
“She didn’t accuse me of anything directly.” I stated.
“No,” Margot agreed. “She didn’t need to.”
I glanced back at the screen.
“She made herself the victim,” I said quietly.
“And you?” Margot asked.
I didn’t answer immediately.
I didn’t need to.
Margot did it for me. “Unstable,” she said. “Erratic. Volatile.”
Each word landed cleanly.
Carefully chosen.

“Dangerous, if they push it far enough.”
I looked away from the screen, turning my sight towards the window.
The city outside moved like nothing had changed.
Like nothing was unraveling, when truly, my world was.
My phone buzzed again. Then again.
Margot didn’t need to tell me to check it.
I already knew what it was.
Still-I picked it up.
Notifications flooded the screen immediately.
Messages, mentions and tags alike.
I opened one.
Then another, then another.
“She’s actually insane.”
“Lucian put up with THIS?”
“No wonder he left her.”
“Bitter woman energy.”
“She needs help.”
I locked the screen, then set the phone down carefully.
Margot watched me the entire time, simply waiting and assessing.
“You see what she did,” she said.
It wasn’t a question.
“She gave them a story they want to believe.” Margot said, then leaned back slightly in her chair. “And she gave them permission to judge you.”
I nodded once, because everything she said was true.
A quiet pause followed.
Then-
“She also just made herself very central to this case.” Margot added.

LAIM ”
My gaze flicked back to her, surprised.
That was new.
It sounded sharper. Almost strategic.
Margot’s gray eyes held mine; cool and focused.
“She just moved from background complication,” she said, “to primary target.”
There it was.
Eva wasn’t just part of the story anymore.
She had placed herself at the center of it.
Deliberately.
Because she liked being the star of the show.
And somehow, Margot was already thinking of how to use it to our advantage.
I exhaled slowly.
The narrative had shifted again.
And it wasn’t going to stop shifting.
Margot reached for her phone, already moving on, already calculating.
“We’ll deal with it,” she said.
I didn’t respond.
Because this- all of this- was already in motion.
And for the first time, I understood just how far it was going to go.
Eva had played her card smartly. That statement released by her team was very much measured.
She positioned herself as composed. Restrained. Dignified.
The calm one in the middle of chaos.
And by doing that, she let the world draw its own conclusions about me.
It was effective. I had to give her that.
By evening, the weight of it all had settled somewhere deeper.
I sat alone in the office for a moment longer after most people had left.
The building was quieter now.

IN-SERU CLAIRES POV
The noise outside Sinclair&co was still loud, but distant.
For the first time all day, I allowed myself to think about it fully.
The courtroom. My words.
The way they had felt when I said them.
The truth of them.
And how quickly they had been twisted into something else.
How easily something real could be reshaped into something convenient.
Then Eva’s team’s statement to the press.
I leaned back slightly, closing my eyes.
Just for a second.
Then I remembered Nathaniel’s voice.
“They don’t know you.”
It was like I was hearing him in my head all over again.
I exhaled quietly, then sat up straighter and opened my eyes.
My resolve was back. My thoughts were clearer this time.
I wouldn’t let them define the ending for me.
After work, I began packing up slowly.
File by file, paper by paper.
Trying to restore order where I could.
Someone called for “Mrs. Dhark”.
I looked up.
“Yes?”
The door opened slightly and one of the assistants stepped in, holding something large.
“For you.”
I frowned slightly.
“For me?”
She nodded, stepping forward and placing it carefully on my desk.
