The Wife he threw Away (Claire and Lucian) novel Chapter 99

CHAPTER NINETY-NINE EVA’S POV

Welp, this had become more dangerous than I expected. And too soon.

Lucian wasn’t reacting anymore.

He was watching.

And that was more of a problem than his anger, the frozen accounts and Theo’s dismissal could ever be.

I stood by the window, holding my phone in my hand as I stared out across the grounds of the mansion.

Everything looked the same; gleaming, impeccable, perfect.

Old money. Just like preferred.

But things were shifting.

Lucian was no longer someone I could steer with ease. In fact, he never had been.

But now, he was thinking. He was calculating.

And that meant I had to move faster.

I dialed the number without hesitation. It rang twice.

“Sterling?” the voice answered, cautious.

“Has he called?” I asked.

A brief pause.

“Yes.”

Of course he had. Smart, investigative Lucian, who never let anything elude him.

But this time, I was smarter.

I turned slightly, my gaze settling on my reflection in the glass.

Lucian was a fool to treat a woman as beautiful as me like a second option.

“And?” I asked.

Another pause followed- longer this time. “We handled it.” Came the answer.

I smiled faintly. “How thoroughly?”

“All records match your visits,” the man continued carefully. “Appointments, consultations, notes. Everything is consistent.”

Good. Very good.

“And his questions?” I pressed.

“Routine,” they replied. “Nothing we couldn’t address.”

I let out a slow breath.

Not relief, but confirmation.

“I’m glad that that problem was contained,” I said softly. “For now.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

I ended the call without another word.

Lucian was looking.

But he hadn’t found anything yet. And that meant I still had control.

Theo, on the other hand, had been less fortunate. It didn’t matter. He should’ve been more careful.

I picked up my phone again, scrolling briefly before dialing his number.

The line was answered almost immediately.

“Ma’am.”

There was tension in his voice.

Fear- predictable.

“You were fired,” I said.

“Yes.”

“And?”

“They’re auditing everything,” he added quickly. “Accounts, transfers-he’s going deeper than before.”

I tilted my head slightly.

“And you’re surprised?”

“No-just-”

I didn’t let him finish.

“You should have been more careful.”

The line went silent. Heavy, uncomfortable silence.

“I did everything you asked,” he said finally.

“You did what was necessary,” I corrected. “Don’t confuse the two.”

“He knows,” Theo added, more quietly. “Or at least… he suspects.”

Of course he did.

Lucian wasn’t a fool- I knew that better than anyone. His mind worked like a machine; thorough and rigid.

That had never been the problem.

The problem had always been that he chose not to see certain things.

“Then we adjust,” I said simply.

I told myself I wouldn’t panic. I had planned this elaborate scheme for too long and very carefully.

Lucian couldn’t just unravel it all at once, no matter how smart he thought he was.

“Yes, ma’am.”

I ended the call.

Theo had been useful.

That was all.

And if he couldn’t withstand pressure, then he had already outlived his usefulness.

People were replaceable afterall.

I moved away from the window, crossing the room slowly as I let everything settle into place.

Lucian was investigating me. He had restricted my access.

The situation was tightening, but none of that mattered.

In the end, I would still be victorious. Just six more months.

I placed a hand lightly against my abdomen, then picked up my phone again.

This time, I didn’t hesitate.

The number wasn’t saved. It didn’t need to be- I never saved these kind of contacts.

It rang longer before it was answered.

“…it’s been a while.”

“Yes,” I replied lightly. “It has.”

He took a moment to clear his throat, then went straight to the point. “What do you need?”

Good.

“I need something handled,” I said.

Silence.

He was waiting, as he always did.

“The lawyer, Lucian Dhark’s ex-wife.” I continued. “And the woman backing her.”

The man paused, and I could tell he was paying closer attention now.

“…specifics?”

“Not yet,” I said calmly. “But soon.”

I stepped toward the mirror, adjusting a strand of hair absently as I watched myself.

“They’ve become… inconvenient.”

A quiet exhale came from the other end of the line. “Understood.”

“I’ll be in touch,” I added.

The line went dead.

Claire… and Margot Sinclair. Those wenches.

I considered the names carefully.

Not emotionally, but strategically.

Lucian’s reaction at the event replayed in my mind.

The way he had followed her.

The way his attention had shifted from me, to that boring ex wife of his- uncontrolled, unguarded.

And then-

The money. Not the one hundred and seventy million, but the fifty million thag was meant for Claire. That was what he was so angry about.

I smiled faintly.

Claire wasn’t irrelevant.

No, she was leverage.

And that made her dangerous. Which meant she needed to be handled properly.

I set my phone down and made my way toward the hallway.

In all my years in the limelight, I had learnt many ways to remove a problem.

But the most effective ones- were public.

The anniversary for the Elena Foundation.
