Alex's tone was soft, but every word felt like a knife twisting in the gut:

A heavy, suffocating silence descended on the study.
Sammie lowered his gaze, his long lashes completely obscuring the turbulent emotions in his eyes. Nobody could tell what was going through his head.
An eternity seemed to pass before he finally looked up.
"I know."
Sammie's voice was low, carrying an imperceptible rasp. For the first time, he let the mask slip in front of another person.
"I know she'll hate me."
"I know everything I'm doing is only making her despise me more and driving her further away."
"I know I'm being selfish. I know I'm crossing the line. I know I'm being unreasonable."
With every confession, his face grew a shade paler.
Alex watched him, letting him speak.
It was obvious that Sammie knew exactly what he was doing—he just didn't have a choice.
"Then why are you doing it?"
Alex asked quietly. "Letting her go is the best thing for her, and for you."
"She can go chase her dreams, and you can live your life with Chloe. You go your separate ways and never look back. Wouldn't that be better?"
