The Wolf Came on Christmas (Johanna and Alexander) novel Chapter 38

Andre came straight to me, very angry:

“Han, tell her to give my sister back! Sasha doesn’t want to be with her!” he told me, then turned toward the blonde woman with a ferocity that left me just as stunned as it did her. “My sister doesn’t like you-can’t you understand that?”

“Look, kid, your sister has to eat, it’s been hours since-” the woman began, annoyed.

Hans cut her off with a growl that made the blonde look at him and fall silent. I turned toward him, and he approached me, extending his hand kindly:

“I’m Hans Schneider. Do you remember me?” he asked. I nodded and returned the greeting calmly, in full “hostess” mode for the first time since all of this had begun. “Andre insists that you get along very well with the little one. Would you like to try feeding her? She hasn’t wanted to eat anything since this morning and I’m a bit worried. We can’t calm her either.”

“I can do that,” I admitted, and stepped closer, waiting for the other woman to hand me the baby.

“She’s my daughter, Annika,” Hans explained, introducing the stern blonde woman. “My son Christian and Richard Byrne, our colleague, are on watch in the yard now. Don’t worry, no neighbor will suspect them. They know how to be discreet-that’s their job. This is Toshi, our IT specialist. How are you feeling?”

“…I don’t have neighbors, anyway,” I replied, and moved my injured arm slightly. “I feel much better now, it doesn’t hurt as much anymore. Thank you.”

The blonde woman looked at me with a certain weariness as she came over to hand me Sasha and the bottle. As soon as the baby saw me (or sensed my presence, I don’t know), she began to cry louder and stretched out her little arms for me to take her. That was the definitive proof, and even though it hurt, I tried to push my humanity forward to receive her against my chest, holding her with my uninjured arm. Sasha took refuge almost immediately at my neck and stopped crying after a few seconds. Even so, I could tell she was looking at the blonde woman as if she hated her-or a little more than that. It was hilarious, but I didn’t feel like laughing.

“It worked,” Hans said, with a surprised smile.

“I told you so,” Andre snorted, crossing his arms.

“I don’t understand. She’s just an ordinary woman,” the blonde muttered, and shoved the bottle almost into my face so I would take it. It took me a bit of effort to lift my injured arm

to grab the bottle, but when I did, Sasha asked for it immediately. Nika looked at me again as if I were some kind of strange creature. “Fine, it’s official. I don’t understand anything at all.”

“You’re a stranger to the child, Nika,” Hans replied, with kind, paternal seriousness. “In the absence of her mother, the little one has taken Mrs. Grant as a substitute. It’s natural. Why

don’t we go outside and see if your brother has anything to report?”

“We have radios, Father,” she said.

“Still, it won’t hurt us to go out for a bit. Let’s go.”

That was clearly an order, and it made the blonde woman change the suspicious expression she had apparently it worked. She sighed and nodded, then headed for the back door. Hans took one last look at Sasha and Andre and gave a hand signal to the oriental man before leaving after his daughter.

When the door closed and Toshi, Andre, the baby, and I were left alone, I sat down. Well, if I had made it this far without becoming hysterical, I was going to be fine.

There were a bunch of non-human strangers in my house, and I had just been attacked by another unknown being. It could simply be classified as some kind of invasion, but I wasn’t in a position to lose control-not when there were two children who depended so much on me. Sasha, at least; Andre was much more independent. And his attitude toward the others made me wonder if that was another of the things his father had instilled in him.

I noticed more trash bags stacked near the door, and while I adjusted Sasha more comfortably on my lap so she could eat calmly, I cleared my throat.

“So… are all of you… like Alexander?” I asked-perhaps the dumbest question in history.

Andre stood at my side, glaring at the oriental man with hostility. That made me smile unconsciously.

He was a VERY brave child.

“That’s right. Don’t worry, Mrs. Grant. Rex already gave us the information about the case and there’s nothing to fear,” the other man said. It was obvious that English wasn’t a language he spoke with complete fluency-he dragged some words, the r’s were difficult for him. He gave me a small bow with the upper half of his body, a greeting. “My name is Ishida Hitoshi, but you can call me Toshi, it’s simpler.”

With a gesture of his hand, he pointed to two long, slender objects leaning against the counter beside his leg. I recognized them immediately: sheathed samurai swords. I’d seen a couple of movies where those weapons seemed very popular. He was Japanese. According to what Alexander had said, there was a family of werewolves in Japan-he had called them ”

“I don’t know. I want my dad to tell me,” the boy replied.

“All right, we’ll wait until your dad wakes up and tells you it’s okay. But in the meantime, I’m going to trust him-does that sound fair? And if not, you can always tell me ‘I told you so’ Remember, you and I are friends.” I tried to defuse the situation as best I could.

Andre seemed to accept that last part and nodded, but he didn’t move away from my side.

“In a way, I understand,” the Hattai said calmly after another moment of watching Andre with interest. “He has grown up far from our kind, with his father as his only counterpart. It’s normal for little ones to be very dependent on their mothers in the early years of life and to want to defend you, since you’re an ordinary person and, for the moment, a very important figure to him and the girl. But everything related to Alexander is a peculiar case, so…”

“You mean peculiar because he went against his father and disappeared?”

The oriental man suddenly grew serious and looked at me with what seemed like a bad temper. It was hard to tell, because his expression was severe but also surprised. Maybe he hadn’t expected me to know that much.

“I see Alexander has given you MANY details,” he conceded.

“As I said, I asked, and it’s my fault.”

At that moment, Sasha finished her milk and sighed, her big blue eyes fixed on me. I wiped her mouth a bit with a napkin (and every movement pulled horribly at the patches covering my wounds, but I tried to endure it) and stood up to wash the bottle. I wasn’t going to be able

to do everything while holding the baby, so I bent down a little to hand her to her brother. Andre took her eagerly and began to rock her while speaking to her in Russian; the little girl started laughing like crazy.
