I didn’t become sheriff until after I found Kaylee. Before her, I was just a rural cop and I asked to be transferred to a different district every six months. Kaylee is my partner, my compatible person. -as he spoke about his wife, Luke looked at her. She pointed at the snacks on the small table, and he stretched to hand her a cup of tea, which she didn’t drink either, but at least she didn’t sniff it suspiciously. Kaylee seemed more comfortable than her husband- When you have a partner, you’re strong enough to settle in one place, and as long as there are no dogs around, the territory is yours and you protect it. And guess what? There aren’t any of yours this far north in the United States. Wyoming, Montana, Washington, North Dakota, Idaho, Oregon, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan – all these states have become territory of our species more out of obligation than because we like it. We prefer warm places, but you live in the south. And felines are sedentary only in dog-free territory. -he paused again, letting the information sink in. The wolves were stone-still-With what you imagine you know about us, you’ll never manage it. Don’t you, loves? You dogs think you’re above everyone else. Just because your families are rich and united, and you’ve managed to stick your tails into every corner of the world you could crawl into. You don’t know what it means to SURVIVE.
“Wolves,” Alexander cut in, severe. “If you demand respect from me, I want it from you too.”
“All right. Wolf.”
“You can call me Alexander,” the alpha offered, as a gesture of goodwill.
“And you can call me Sheriff McCord.” -a gesture the feline immediately dismissed casually – It’s simple. Ajay didn’t have a mate, he had a partner. I’ll locate Ajay’s wife and make sure she gets far away from this area, and most importantly, that she doesn’t seek revenge. But
– has a mate. the panther – that beast whose scent is all over this house
“You just said you don’t function well in groups larger than two,” Alexander reminded him.” And we know there are three of them.”
“There are four, actually. Well, there were four, if we count Ajay. -the sheriff corrected patiently-But their leaders were at my house, and they told me some very interesting and equally insane things. Think, wolf… you don’t function without a leader, you don’t organize to fight without an ‘alpha, right? I imagine that you, based on the position you occupy in this room, are that ‘alpha.’ You must be a white wolf. Now, I suspect that while each family separately has its internal ‘alphas, they all answer to your family. Or am I wrong?”
“No, you’re not wrong. But you still don’t have a point.”
“Aren’t

they WORK. The point is that we tend to be solitary and independent, but we also have a dominant class. It’s the natural order of things – there’s always a leader. Think: what’s the only feline that lives in packs, in fixed territory?”
“Lions,” Andre said immediately and confidently. “They live in prides with a few males and many females. The male doesn’t do anything, and the females hunt and take care of the cubs. I saw it on the Discovery Channel.”
Christian opened his mouth wide, surprised, and Hans smiled. Alexander stroked his son’s hair with a proud gesture. The answer seemed pleasing to Luke, because he made his peculiar sound again and immediately continued:
“Smart kid. Of course, lions. Kings of the jungle.”
Then Nika turned to Hans and put her hand on his forearm.
“…Father, the message on the sawmill wall,” she said in English. “The king is watching.”
“As Mrs. Grant said too,” Christian added with a growl.
“So… it’s a lion? They all work under a lion’s command?” the father replied.

“Well, the lion led the conversation when they visited us at our house. That was three nights ago.” His voice darkened, as did his gaze. “And do you want to know what’s most chilling? I actually couldn’t stop listening to him. I mean… his voice, I… I’ve dealt with lions before, but never in person. Quite an experience for someone of my kind. For both of us.” He glanced at his wife for a second, then continued. “They all went there in their ordinary forms to ‘recruit’ us for their little hunting operation; but he didn’t demand we join them he simply invited us. As if he had no doubt we would accept. He spoke very politely. I couldn’t ignore him. I didn’t even know you were in my territory until he told me. But when he started talking about what he planned to do, that’s when I knew I had to get away from him and his group as fast as possible.”

Only then did Luke lift his gaze and meet Alexander’s stormy eyes. The wolf asked:
“And how did you manage to refuse, assuming your story is true, Sheriff McCord?”

“I have more important things to think about. My family, my reputation, my territory, and all the people who live in it. I wasn’t going to let four lowlife fleabags come butcher up my county.” He said it as if he’d been accused of something he hadn’t done. “Look, wolf. Obviously, both sides need help. I need you to protect Kaylee and the baby, and you need information. I think we could make a good deal here.”
“I don’t make deals with cats,” Alexander growled with lethal ferocity. He bared his clenched fangs at the puma in a savage grimace. “The last time I trusted one of you, I had to grab my children and run from my own home…”
