Chapter 95-1
A while later, they had dug a hole deep enough for at least three to fit inside, somewhat
cramped.
André stayed with me, acting as lookout (he took it very seriously); his father had dressed him in my coat, still in his wolf form. Remembering Rex’s plan, I tore Christian’s winter shirt into strips and quickly wrapped the child’s feet, thinking they would work similarly to the little booties they put on sled dogs’ paws.
With his fur dirty with soil, Alexander said something about getting into the hole with him.
The hole wasn’t very deep (it wasn’t remotely a burrow – it was nothing more than a dip in the shadow of a snow mound, at least sheltered from the wind and sleet), and it also seemed like a very suitable surveillance hiding spot.
Rex took Nika, who had suddenly recovered from her grief, and lost them from sight just as I realized Alexander had already sat at the bottom of the hole, his back against the wall.
André curled up beside him, calmly pressing against the left side of his body beneath his father’s heavy arm.
At first I resisted the idea.
Alexander extended his free arm toward me and urged me to climb into the pit.
All right.
The final frontier.
Would I dare that much?
Curl up with him – with them?
As if I were one of them, rather?
I dared, of course.
Accepted.
Because I’m stupid, I accepted.
Because I’m stupid and I was cold.
I took his hand, timidly. The touch of his rough, cold pads was shocking. Touching him made
it clearer than ever that that hand-paw wasn’t human, but when his long, horrible fingers

“…Where are Rex and Nika?” I whispered very softly.

“On the other side, keeping watch. Don’t worry, they’ll curl up together and they’ll be fine.”
“…She didn’t like the idea much,” I commented, with some irony.

“I think what Nika doesn’t want is for someone else to smell Rex on her clothes or skin
afterward, but we can’t do anything about that. She doesn’t shift, she doesn’t have fur to protect her and neither do you,” he explained, speaking in an almost inaudible whisper, and it was unsettling to see his jaws moving to speak right at eye level. The way his black lips articulated was astonishing, even though on the outside it was the same muzzle as any
animal.

my family does. The point of a Circle is that the leader has a representative from each of the other families at his disposal, both as soldier and intermediary between him and the minor leaders of the other families.

“When I left, I suppose my Circle dissolved, and that’s why Rahmed and Emiliano refused to come when I called them
not even when Rex asked them.” He paused again, as if searching for the right words. “But it’s more complex than that. For us it has a deeper meaning. A consolidated Circle is absolutely loyal to its leader… mine never fully consolidated, and well – you already know the rest.”
I thought of something like the first “pack” of a young “alpha.”
I was impressed.
“…Okay, I’m guessing you left home for something more than Anya,” I remarked, curious.
He tensed. I felt his muscles harden beneath the fur.
“Well, you don’t know my father,” Alexander replied firmly.
“He wanted you to be a good leader, right? Like your brother.”
“I insist, you don’t know my father,” he countered, teeth slightly clenched. “And I wouldn’t say my brother is a good leader yet. He was sixteen when I left, and no one expected him to have to replace me. He wasn’t raised from birth for this. But he’s doing well with the corporation – he has a good seat on the board. From time to time I look for information about them, about what they’re doing. Mikhail has been taught well. I suppose my father must have built a Circle for him too, seeing as I wasn’t coming back.”
“And why do you disapprove of your father so much, then?”
Well, that definitely wasn’t any of my business – but again, if Alexander didn’t want to answer, he didn’t have to. What was also curious was that neither Rex nor Nika (the most suspicious one) stopped him from talking about it. Did they already know these things, or did they let him speak because they wanted to know too?
I know I heard everything perfectly.
