Chapter 105

Sienna

He came down the front steps hastily pulling his jacket on, phone tucked between his ear and shoulder, talking to someone.

The driver got out to open the door for Connor who shook his head, and took the keys from him.

Connor got in.

Sorry,he said, pulling the door shut. I just hadn’t expected to receive the call. Momshe hasn’t asked for anyone before and I had so much work to do

It’s okay,I said.

I told you I’d be down in ten minutes.

It was eleven,I teased. Catastrophic.

He looked at me sideways and let out a shaky laugh, and some of the compressed energy in his shoulders loosened fractionally.

He started the car and I watched him adjust the mirrors, check his phone once and put it face down on the dash. His jaw was set and he was trying hard to keep himself under control.

The contract,I said. Whatever your father asked you to do. Did you finish it?

He glanced at me. Why are you asking about the contract?

Your father wanted it before two,I said. It’s half past twelve. I was just concerned

I have time,he replied as we pulled out of the driveway. Why are you worried about my work schedule?

I’m not worried, I just

Are you,he said, and the corner of his mouth curled up a little, asking about Elise Harrington specifically.

I’m asking about the contract.

Because the contract involves Elise.

The contract involves a distribution clause for the northern territory,” I said. Which has nothing to do with Elise.

You’re jealous,he smirked with the satisfaction of someone completing a puzzle.

Don’t think so highly of yourself.”

Pity, I have always had a very high opinion of myself

He chuckled and I looked out the window.

The truth was that I wasn’t only jealous of Elise Harrington, I was afraid Alpha Asher was going to keep putting Elise in Connor’s way under the guise of work and the way she had run that day from his room, crying and heartbrokenI feared it wouldn’t take long before I find her in his room again.

30

She is the girl I saw running out of your room when we met at the diner, right?I asked aloud and Connor muttered.

I was wondering when you would ask me that

That’s hardly an answer

Connor continued driving as he explained. I wont deny the fact that I always wanted something casual so I only ever spent one night with a girl

He said looking at me and I definitely knew he had spent more than one with me.

but Elise wanted more even after I explicitly stated it wasn’t going to happen so she was there to argue with me. Not the first impression I wanted to leave on you but that’s how it turned out.

So in London

Nothing happened in London. She wanted to teach me a lesson so she made me run behind her just because she is Harrington’s doll but I finally managed to get the deal and came straight back to you. You know I didn’t go meet her by choice.

I fell silent at that, not because I couldn’t tell him about alpha asher or feared that he wouldn’t believe me.

The problem was that he would definitely believe me.

Connor was talkative and arrogant but suspiciously quiet about his personal life. The only special person in his life, his mother, drifted between imagination and reality.

He had one parent, his mother, who sometimes knew his name and sometimes didn’t.

He was driving toward her with hope sitting carefully in his expression, the otherwise confident man trying to hide his nervousness.

It didn’t feel right to tell him his father wasn’t any better either. It would be too cruel, especially when he looked so hopeful. From the few interactions between them, I had guessed their relationship was a little strained. There was no need to add further fuel to the fire.

I’m not jealous,I said again, more quietly, and let him think it was about Elise because that put a smile on his face.

If you say so

It could mean something, the remembering,he said, tapping his thumb on the steering wheel. The doctor said it wasn’t typical for the condition at this stage but conditions weren’t always linear. There were cases of patients having extended lucid periods, and she hadn’t just remembered my name in passing but had

specifically asked for you

Hmm

It suggests a level of intentional recall that’s different from the usual baseline, so it’s possible the new medication is working, right?”

It could mean something,I said and gave his hand a gentle squeeze. I just don’t want you to be too hopeful.

He was quiet for a moment. I don’t want to losehe started, and didn’t finish the sentence, but I understood

I know, you won’tI said, trying to sound confident.
