The Wrong Brother's Temptation novel Chapter 106

r 106

His mother was sitting on the edge of the bed with a book open in her lap.

She was smaller than I rememberedor perhaps last time I hadn’t been close enough to fully register her. 1 could see her face properly, because she was sitting quietly and I saw Connor in her immediately.

The line of the jaw, sharp features and those gorgeous eyes that he had inherited from his mother stared back at me and then I saw what Connor must have been looking at every birthday for six years. She was a woman who had once been very beautiful and very present and was now sometimes one and not always the other.

I felt very sorry for Connor for not having a mom who worried about him reaching home on time constantly. No wonder, he always ensured to listen to mine and update her about my whereabouts.

That was just one of the several little facts I noticed about him right now as I walked up to greet his mother.

She looked up when I came in.

Oh, she said, her voice warm and welcoming. You came.

How could I not?,I replied with a smile as she patted on the chair beside the bed, asking me to take a seat.

It’s nice to see you.”

You too,she said, her eyes observing me keenly. Last time I couldn’t see you properly but I must say that you’re even prettier up close.

Thank you,I said and then added. Not as much as you.”

She truly was pretty with her fair skin, long, luscious hair and an infectious smile.

I’m having a good day,she remarked. I don’t always so I thought of making the best out of it.She set the book aside.

Tell me about yourself, she said. Where are you from? What do you like? She smiled. I want to know everything about you.

I laughed, and it was sweet to see her act so normal and interested in me, like she was….my mother in law?

I grew up nearby,I said. I like to read as well but I’m very bad at cooking, which my mother finds shameful.

She laughed. My mother found everything I did shameful, she said. It’s a mother’s right.

Wish I could have spent more time with my mothershe sighed and I wondered what to say to it when she added. Or that I could have gotten a chance to be a good mother myself,

I glanced toward the door where Connor was visible through the small window. He seemed to be on his phone, halfturned away, and I was glad he hadn’t heard this bit.

What do you mean?I asked, growing a little confused.

Just like every girl, I wanted a happy married life, a cute little kid but fate wasn’t so kind to me

She would have continued if not for her taking a glance at the door and noticing Connor was watching us.

She hid her face behind mine and looked at me uneasily,

You were saying?

Forget what I was saying, tell me all about you.

I wasn’t sure if I should coax her to continue her earlier line so I gave her a brief introduction about myself that she listened to very attentively.

There was another noise from outside the door and we both turned to see the doctor peeking in through the glass window as well.

Connor’s mom grew even more nervous as she suddenly leaned forward and took my hands in hers.

You should go,she said.

II looked at her. Are you all right?

You should leave immediately, she repeated, and her voice had changed from that warm pleasant tone to a nervous, terrified one.

Before he comes in.

BeforeI followed her gaze to the door. That’s Connor,I said gently. That’s your son.
