Alpha Asher was standing on the upper landing, at the top of the entrance steps, looking down at both of us.

His face had a tight, controlled expression, which was the most dangerous version of him. He was still in his suit, which meant he’d come from the office and probably had also heard and watched bits of what had just happened.

He brought his hands together once more, clapping sarcastically and let them fall.

“My office,” he said. “Both of you.”

Aaron got up from the bushes, dusting twigs and dried leaves away as we both hurried upstairs without a word.

His dark, polished office was organized like always and I was instantly reminded of the times when he would catch us in an argument and summon us to our office.

More often than not, what followed was never in my favor.

Alpha Asher went behind his desk and sat down leaning back on his chair, and we stood there like criminals awaiting judgment.

Aaron straightened slightly like he always did in Alpha Asher’s presence, his expression solemn and head bent down a little to indicate his worship

He adored alpha Asher even though he was clumsy as fuck and couldn’t tell a loss making deal from a profit making one. He was good at faking obedience as opposed to me.

I stood normally.

“I watched,” my father said, “two grown men–one of whom I am considering for the highest position this pack can offer–conduct themselves like bickering children in the front drive of our family estate, in view of the gate, within earshot of the security staff no less.” He paused and his sharp gaze moved from me to Aaron.

“Can either of you elaborate on what I witnessed?”

“It was just a disagreement,” Aaron answered, hands folded in the front and head still slightly bowed. “That got out of hand. It won’t happen again.”

Alpha Asher looked at me.

“He’s right,” I said.

“Reassuring,” my father remarked, with a dryness that suggested he found it anything but. “The reputation of this pack is not something to be taken lightly. It is built over generations through consistent behavior. responsible leadership and the restraint to handle disputes privately” He looked between us. “What is this disagreement?”

“Personal matter,” 1 quipped before Aaron could butt in.

“Nothing in this family is a personal matter,” my father leaned forward, brows furrowing. “When you conduct it in my driveway!”

Aaron opened his mouth and I spoke first, not to say anything specific, just to close the gap before he could fill it with something that would move this conversation in a direction I didn’t want it to go.

“It’s resolved,” I reassured him. “You won’t see it again.”

Alpha Asher narrowed his eyes on me.

You both are supposed to present a united front in front of the society as brothers and future leaders of the pack. I hope you realize you are not in a school or college anymore to engage in such dishonorable and shameful behavior”

“Especially you, Connor. Are you hellbent on making the elders prove wrong when they laid out a rule that the eldest son was eligible to be the next alpha of the pack?”

I let out a breath. “No, alpha Asher”

“Aaron is younger to you so you are supposed to be more composed and calm, aren’t you?”

Aaron jumped in. “But dad I was not even…”

Alpha Asher raised his hand to indicate Aaron to shut up and thankfully he did.

“Yes alpha. As I promised, you won’t see it again”

He looked at me for a moment like he didn’t believe me but chose not to press about it.

“You do seem a bit distracted these days, Connor” He stated his observation as he got up from his seat and came to stand in front of the table.

“What makes you think so, alpha?” I enquired.

He idly spun the paperweight on his table while I heard Aaron audibly swallow beside me.

“Because you are. You left for some personal business and cancelled all meetings the day alpha Harrington was supposed to arrive”

“But I did crack the deal”

Alpha Asher nodded. “Eventually, but it left us begging for his deal rather than talk like equals. You were used like a puppet by his daughter I believe.”

I said nothing to that.

“I had initially negotiated a 50-50 deal with him but because of your negligence, we had to settle on 40-60%. Are you aware of it?”

“Yes alpha”

The paperweight continued to spin under his fingers.

“I gave you another chance today, asking for a simple clause check before two pm. Care to tell me what time it is now?”

“I need a few minutes…” I started.

“It is four–thirty,” Alpha Asher cut me off.

He didn’t look at the clock because he didn’t need to.

“The deadline was before two.”

“I apologize for the delay”

“You had a personal matter again, I believe?” Alpha Asher asked in a way that didn’t need an answer because he knew he was right.

“While the Harrington team was waiting. While I…was waiting”

I’ll have it done within the next five minutes,” I quickly pulled out my phone and browsed through the files.

“The question I am asking you right now is whether the alpha of this pack can have his instructions followed in the window he specifies by the future alpha.” He threw me a sharp, assessing gaze. “And whether I have been, perhaps, optimistic about certain things when it comes to you.”

Aaron stepped forward.

“He’ll have it done, Dad. I know he will. Connor is…” he paused to look at me like he adored me.

“He’s the eldest after all. He deserves the title and he has been working hard on every single task you gave him. The elders would expect it and they’re right to.”

He spread his hands with a show of reasonableness that I found impeccably timed. “I think we should trust the process and you should forgive him. He was just stressed out.”

My father looked visibly impressed at Aaron for backing me up even when I never asked him to.

“Aaron,” he said and the first hint of a warm smile appeared on his face. “You chose to defend him?”

Aaron nodded. “Yes dad, he is my elder brother after all”

Oh for fuck’s sake!

I wanted to gag at his terrible show of familial ties and unbreakable bond between us but I restrained myself somehow.
