I was debating disconnecting the call but he answered on the second ring.

“Hey,” I said, and immediately felt Jane’s pointed look from across the bed because my voice had gone approximately three octaves higher than normal.
“Hey,” Connor replied and he sounded a bit tired. “You okay?”
“Yes! Fine! How are you? How’s the weather?”
Jane put her face in the pillow and groaned.
“The weather?” Connor repeated.
“Yes,” I said, wanting to slap myself. “Is it, you know, nice outside right now?”
Connor took a second longer to answer than usual. “Sienna. Are you feeling alright?”
“Completely fine,” I replied with more enthusiasm than necessary. “I just gave you a call to check on you. Um… how’s work?”
“Nowhere finished,” he replied and I heard him crack his knuckles. “For today. Though I might have to put in some late night hours.”
“Good,” I squeaked. “Great in fact. Focussing on work is necessary”
I was blabbering and Jane was making frantic gestures that I couldn’t decode.
“That’s so good. I’m glad.” Jane pointed at herself and then mimed rocking a baby. “I…what?”
“What?” Connor repeated after me.
“Sorry, not you,” I said. “I was just… I was thinking about your baby.”
Jane slapped her forehead.
“My baby?” Connor sounded genuinely confused.
“No, fuck, not your baby” I said as Jane was stabbing fingers in the air aggressively, moving her hand on her belly.
“Our baby. I want to give you a baby” Jane was now slamming her forehead on the door.
Connor’s voice didn’t sound human when he asked, “I beg your pardon?”
“No, I mean, your mom” I replied finally decoding Jane’s gestures and she seemed to clutch her chest and slowly collapse on the floor.

“She was lovely today,” I said. “And I…just wanted to thank you again for giving me the chance to meet her
His voice went a bit hollow. “She liked you,” he murmured. “I could see it even through the glass.”
“I liked her,” I said, and meant it completely. “She makes the same face you make when something is funny but you don’t want to admit it.”
He sounded genuinely amused. “She does?”
“A hundred percent. You inherited her smile and her pretty features”
Jane had stopped the chaotic miming and was sitting very still with her chin on her knees and watching me with a delighted expression.
“Did you just call me pretty?”
“I, yes, in a way.”
“She used to read to me,” Connor spoke fondly. “Every night. She was terrible at the voices.”
Jane was now urging me to speed up the conversation.
“Did you keep the books?” I asked nonchalantly. “The ones she used to read?”
“I have them in a room I use to store her things. There’s some furniture she liked, and some photos as well. I had it set up when she moved to the hospital.” he confirmed.
“Why?”
“I just…” I picked up Jane’s discarded pillow and held it. “I’d love to see them if that’s okay with you. I feel like you can tell a lot about a person from their hobbies” I finished lamely.
“You want to see my mother’s storybooks?” he sounded a bit skeptical.
“Is that strange?”
“Not really,” he quipped and his voice took on that slightly wistful tone that made my chest tighten.
“I’m a bit busy this week but I can show you her stuff later if you like.”
“Okay,” I said. “Good.”
Jane was pointing aggressively at herself and mouthing flirt with an energy that suggested she felt this was absolutely necessary.
I ignored her.
She grabbed my arm and mouthed it again. FLIRT.
I shook my head.

She grabbed a pen from my desk and wrote on her palm and held it up: you will never find the books if you don’t get him to move faster.
This was arguable logic but I didn’t have a pen to argue back with.
“Connor,” I tried again.
“Mm.”
“I was…I missed talking to you,” I mumbled, which was true and also came out considerably more directly than I’d intended.
“Yeah?” his voice had shifted into something warmer and more dangerous.
“Yes,” I confirmed, and Jane was doing something triumphant with her hands. “I kept… I kept thinking about…” I stopped, thinking wildly.
“About?” he probed.
“Things,” I muttered lamely.
“Specific things?” he supplied, and there it was, the slight drop of his voice, the tone that meant he’d identified the direction of the conversation and was following it.
“Possibly specific?” I tried, and Jane put both fists in the air silently.
“Tell me about these specific things,” he demanded.
“Well,” I said, “I kept thinking about the car.”
Jane made a sound and muffled it in the pillow.
“Did you now?,” Connor seemed very interested in the conversation now.
“And…” I was already regretting this, “…the…you know. After.”
“I’m going to need you to be more precise,” he replied, in the voice that had no business being that low, “because I’m thinking about several things involving you and the car and after, and I want to make sure we’re discussing the same stuff”
My face was extremely hot now. “I was thinking about the bath.”
“And what specifically about the bath were you thinking about?”
“You were very…uh…like” I was floundering completely and Jane’s shoulders were shaking with suppressed laughter. I finished. “You were thorough.”
He was quiet for a moment, and I heard something that might have been a quiet laugh.
“I see”

“Yes,” I was glaring hard at Jane while also trying to keep my voice normal with as much dignity as I could
