The file had been open on my desk for forty minutes and I’d read the first paragraph six times.
My mind kept replaying the conversation with Sienna on a loop, the way she was fumbling for words before shyly admitting that she really loved me getting rough with her.
Then she proceeded to go completely to pieces when I’d offered alternatives, which had been the most entertaining four minutes of my week and also the reason I was now sitting in my office unable to stop imagining doing things to her rather than sitting in the office, reading a paragraph.
I let out a breath, closed the filed and opened it again to read the first sentence.
She wanted to see my mother’s storybooks, which was either the most genuine thing anyone had said to me in recent memory or the thing that was going to finish off whatever remained of my sanity when it came to her.
I pressed my fingers to my eyes and tried reminding myself of the pending work, of Alpha Asher’s words and pushed back from the desk to go to the bathroom.
The water was cold and I gripped the edge of the basin and looked at my reflection.
“Get a grip on yourself” I pointed at the man staring back at me through the mirror and splashed the cold water on my face.
“Stop behaving like a hormonal teenager who gets excited over his crush.”
I scooped water in my palms and splashed it again on my face.
“Behave like a functional adult!”
The bathroom door opened and one of the junior employees walked in, nodding at me with a slightly uncertain expression. I quickly straightened, dried my hands and walked out before it could get any more weird.
Wondering where to go next, I headed towards the coffee machine in the break room and punched the buttons angrily, willing it to produce something that would bring my wandering mind back.
The cup filled with black coffee and I was instantly reminded about the black car and what I did to her in it, just outside the door.
I breathed out through my mouth, spotting a wall to bang my head on and lightly doing so.
She was going to be the end of me.
I had accepted this as a fact and finished the coffee to return back to my desk.
But when I pushed my office door open, Aaron was waiting for me.

Chapter 114
Not standing at my desk, or waiting by the window but sitting in my chair, with his feet on my desk.
He looked up. “Hey.”
“Get out of my chair,” I snapped.
He got out of my chair very slowly. “I need to talk to you about the boundary review.”
“Email me,” I said, grabbing my chair to sit down.
“It’s faster in person”
“Aaron.” I set my coffee down and opened the file to the paragraph I’d now read seven times. “I’m busy.”
“The eastern coordinates have a discrepancy…” He began but I cut him short.
GO
“I said I’m busy. Either go find someone else who can solve it for you or email me and I will look at it later.”
“Connor, it’s a thirty–second conversation at most”
“I don’t want thirty seconds of a conversation with you,” The words came out more honestly than I’d intended. “I want to read this file and work peacefully where nobody is trying to play a game I didn’t agree to play.”
Aaron’s expression briefly looked like genuine hurt.
“I’m not playing a game,” he grew defensive.
“You advocated for me in front of our father this afternoon,” I said, not looking up from the file. “Even when I didn’t ask you to. That was excellent timing, I must say.”
“You are getting it all wrong, Connor”
“Don’t,” I warned. “You’ve never had any brotherly affection for me. You did it just to earn brownie points in Alpha Asher’s eyes which I could clearly tell.” I turned a page I hadn’t read. “Don’t run the game on me. I’m not Sienna and I don’t need your backing.”
Aaron was quiet for a moment.
“I was trying to be a good brother,” he offered lamely.
“You don’t have to try so hard,” I replied. “I know what you think of me.”
He seemed to be prepared to argue again but I gave him a sharp look and he closed his mouth just when there was a knock on the door.
We both looked to see Sandra’s head appear in the gap
“Babe,” she began warmly, and then clocked me at the desk and adjusted the warmth slightly. “Oh. Am I interrupting something?”
“No, Aaron waved his hand at her. “Come in.”
