Luna Lydia’s number on my screen was not something I’d expected on a Tuesday morning, so I stared at it for a full second before answering.

“Sienna, dear,” she greeted me warmly and asked, “Are you free today?”

“Yes,” I said, which was true. I had spent last night lying on my bed staring at Connor’s mother’s after Jane left, rotating it occasionally like looking at it from a different angle would reveal something new.

“Wonderful. I need your help with arrangements at the mansion. Can you come over?”

“Of course,” I answered. “What’s the occasion?”

“The pack elders are arriving,” she informed me.

“Oh, any specific reason?” I asked, growing curious.

“For the succession talks. It’s a tradition in the Ashford pack. The elders come to the sitting alpha before any major transition to discuss the state of the pack, meet the candidates, that sort of thing.”

“Oh I see”

“Yes. It’s been a long time coming. Honestly. Asher has been alpha for twenty years and the elders have been asking him to formalize things for a while now.”

She paused, and I could hear something in the background, someone asking her a question that she covered the phone to answer.

“Anyway. You’ve always had such a good eye for these things, and I like the simplicity you display with the decor for our anniversary every year, and these elders are particular…they don’t love modern aesthetics, they want something that respects the old traditions”

“I’ll be there,” I said, already getting up from the bed.

“Wonderful. Come soon, we’ve already started moving furniture and I need you to be my right hand given that you were officially introduced as Connor’s partner to the guests last time. The elders would love to meet you as well.”

“Sure, I’ll reach in an hour” I answered but then her last lines made me a bit nervous. Decorating stuff in the background was one thing, but meeting the pack elders as Connor’s chose partner was another.

I had almost died of anxiety in the last public event when Connor dropped one bomb after another. So meeting his pack elders would be nerve wracking even if I spent most of my time playing with Aaron in childhood.

I immediately called Jane up and told her about everything, stating my nervousness but she only grew delighted

“Girl, are you for real? This is an excellent opportunity to investigate the rooms in the mansion and find out more about Connor’s mom’s storybooks on your own without even needing Connor.”

I hadn’t thought of that.

“You think so?” I asked and she frowned.

“The only bad thing is you going on this secret hunt alone and me having to rely on your phone call and messages to get the information.”

“Well, it’s the pack’s internal thing so not sure if I can get you in the mansion. But maybe, someday.”

“Yeah, it’s alright. I will live vicariously through you. Now, go, impress some grandmas.”

I chuckled and disconnected, getting dressed faster than usual and was outside the Ashford mansion gate in no time.

I hurriedly climbed up the stairs to see that the living room was buzzing with a lot of activity.

Three servants were rearranging a long table while a fourth stood to the side holding a centerpiece that didn’t know where to go.

Two more were taking down the modern prints that lined the main hall wall, stacking them carefully against the baseboard, and Luna Lydia was standing in the center, instructing them all.

“Sienna.” She came toward me with a relieved expression. “Thank the Goddess you are here. I don’t even know where to begin.”

I looked around the room that almost had been stripped of all the lavish, modern decor leaving just the bare shell behind. The high ceilings, the wide windows that faced the garden, the natural light that came in from the east in the mornings were a good start.

“How many elders are arriving?” I asked.

“Seven,” Luna Lydia answered. “The rest of them are still manageable but Elder Maren is very particular”

I saw the way a slight frown appeared on her face.

“Particular about what specifically?”

“Everything” Luna Lydia sighed miserably and it was almost sweet how she confided in me, a girl way younger and inexperienced than herself who had led the pack for years successfully along with her husband and mate, Alpha Asher.

“She believes modern pack leadership has drifted from its roots. She will be looking for evidence of tradition in everything from the table setting to the food.”

“I see. Does she have any dietary requirements?” I asked.

Luna Lydia blinked. “…yes, actually. Elder Kosta doesn’t eat red meat, and Elder Maren has. let me think she doesn’t eat anything that hasn’t been prepared the traditional way, which means no processed ingredients,
